Update by California Highway Patrol

SUSPECT: Karen Denise Deselms – 56 years old
VEHICLE: White, 2016 Toyota Tacoma
BAIL: $20,000
CHARGES: 2800.2(a) VC

On Tuesday, January 02, 2018, at approximately 4:04 a.m., the California Highway Patrol (CHP) was involved in a multi area pursuit which started in the Newhall area at SR-126 east of Pacific for speeding.  Santa Barbara area was notified about the pursuit, after it went through Moorpark and Ventura CHP areas when it reached US-101 northbound just north of the SR-33 interchange in Ventura County.  The vehicle in question was a white 2016 Toyota Tacoma.  The driver of the Toyota kept straddling traffic lanes and reached speeds up to 120 miles per hour disregarding traffic laws during the pursuit.

The Toyota eventually exited the freeway on La Cumbre Road/ Hope Ave and made a left turn towards La Cumbre Road. The driver of the Toyota made an abrupt right turn on La Cumbre Road and failed to stop for a red traffic signal, traveling through it at approximately 30 mph. The Toyota proceeded northbound on La Cumbre Road towards SR-192.  It approached a red light on the intersection of La Cumbre Road at State Street at approximately 60 mph and proceeded through that intersection failing to stop.  The Toyota then ran a stop sign at the intersection of La Cumbre Road at Pueblo Avenue still driving over 60 mph and failed to stop, running the sign.  The driver of Toyota reached SR-192 and made a left turn onto westbound SR-192 eventually reaching the intersection of Turnpike Road.  The Driver attempted to make a left turn at a high rate of speed, but turned too wide. The Toyota nearly went off the road off the south west road edge of the intersection coming to a complete stop.  CHP Officers on scene initiated a felony stop ultimately taking the solo suspect into custody.

There were no injuries to officers or the suspect during the pursuit.  The driver was evaluated at the Santa Barbara CHP Office and was not under the influence of drugs and or alcohol.

A driver was arrested after leading a high-speed pursuit through Santa Barbara early Tuesday morning.

Reports state the driver was going nearly 115 miles per hour on Highway 101 north from Ventura and arrived in Santa Barbara. The driver was in a white Toyota Tacoma truck with a Colorado license plate.

The driver exited the highway on La Cumbre and turned onto Foothill Road.

An edhat reader reported hearing the pursuit around 4:45 a.m. near Turnpike and Foothill Roads. "I heard squealing of tires and police sirens around the corner of Turnpike and the Cathedral Oaks intersection. It sounded like the driver under pursuit either crashed or stopped when the driver was ordered out of the car over the loud police intercom," reports the edhat reader.

California Highway Patrol from Ventura has arrested one female driver related to this incident.

You want the backstory? Here it is. After nursing her husband of 31 years at home who dies from cancer in her arms she lost touch with herself. This woman has two college degrees but she slipped away in her loss. She wasn't running from anything or doing any drugs or under the influence of alcohol she is psychologically scared of authority and scared of being locked up so fight or flight took over. Unfortunately she was driving a vehicle which allowed the flight to become dangerous. I hope none of you have to have a person in your life that you care for reach this kind of a psychological/emotional breaking point.

I didn't say it gave her any right to break the law. I'm not saying what she did was rational. It was in fact extremely irrational but her thinking is irrational. Her before self would never have done this. Maybe now she will get the help we all know she needs. Many people deal with loss unfortunately she didn't deal with it she got lost in it not wanting help from anyone. Cutting ties with almost everyone. I'm not a psychiatrist so all I have is a layman opinion of what she is suffering from. The loss seems to have triggered something else. I am hopeful that perhaps now someone will be able to get her to accept the type of help she needs.

I'm sorry for her loss I felt that way to after losing my gal who almost died several times and acted like a child every time she drank for the last two years of her life. That does not give me the right to go out and kill the scum bag that raped her while she was drunk the last few months of her life but I think about it everyday. It does not give her the right to do what she did either I did not talk to anyone for awhile right after my gal died I hid after some time I told the guys wife what he did to my girl hoping he would come after me but he didn't. She dumped him i9t still isn't enough I use humor to get through my anger..Loss hurts it doesn't give anyone the right to break the law.

Uh, both men and women have Adam's apples. It's just more pronounced in men. Sure, hers seems rather pronounced. Perhaps she is suffering from a medical condition, thyroid issues or cancer. She looks awfully distressed. Of course, this photo was taken after she had just driven from the 126 Newhall to Turnpike and Cathedral Oaks. Maybe she just got tired of people making comments about her Adam's apple. Some things are private.

Wow, I'm so glad no one was hurt. Will be curious to see an explanation for this. I mean an official explanation, not some wild speculation.

"There were no injuries to officers or the suspect during the pursuit. " And hopefully no innocent bystanders or drivers as well. "The driver was evaluated at the Santa Barbara CHP Office and was not under the influence of drugs and or alcohol." A sober person did this?!? There must be more to this story.

Why must there be "more to this story?" Do you honestly think the CHP lied about lack of drugs/alcohol? Why would they cover that up? Honestly, some people are just hell bent on blaming substances!

I agree FLICKA being a former criminal myself I got into many high speed chases with police most under the influence of alcohol had I'd been smoking weed I might still be sitting there.

SB CHP confirmed that she was not under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol. Just, Steppenwolf: Get your motor runnin' . . . Head out on the highway . . .Lookin' for adventure . . . And whatever comes our way.

As long as we're assuming let's get the usual suspect activities in too. She was probably texting her pot shop and not looking at the speedometer or rear-view mirrors while listening to loud music on her earphones.

What a stupid thing to assume. How on earth do you infer that the driver was on drugs, much less pot. Seriously, grow up.

Hey dummy, re: the "loco weed" theory: "The driver was evaluated at the Santa Barbara CHP Office and was not under the influence of drugs and or alcohol."

Is this what the comment sections are gonna be like now that marijuana *sales* are legal? Newsflash, recreational marijuana use has been legal for over a year now.

You don't know much about marijuana, do you? Had the driver been high on pot, she probably would have only been going 35 on the freeway and stopped for impeding traffic.
