Wilshire Health and Community Services, Inc. in San Luis Obispo will shut down operations after more than four decades serving the local elderly community. The health center will be closing its doors on June 30, 2025.

The organization has been vital for the Central Coast’s elderly community, providing home health care, hospice services, mental health support and senior advocacy programs. Wilshire’s board of trustees stated the decision was driven by unavoidable financial pressures.

Highlights

  • Wilshire Health and Community Services has operated in the San Luis Obispo region for over 40 years.
  • The organization has been offering medical support for seniors and caregivers in the region.
  • It will close its doors on June 30, 2025, ending its services throughout the Central Coast.

Decline in Reimbursements and Rising Operational Costs Contributed to the Closing

Wilshire, a non-profit organization, has been facing unprecedented financial pressures due to rising operational costs and a drop in reimbursements. The reduction in reimbursements, ongoing staffing shortages, and increased costs added to widen the gap between revenue and operating expenses.

However, Wilshire is not the only organization facing tough circumstances. There has been a broader trend impacting healthcare providers nationwide. This has been observed particularly in the post-pandemic healthcare market, where Medicare and insurance reimbursements have failed to keep pace due to rising service costs.

Due to the closure, Wilshire has now moved its focus towards transitioning clients and residents while providing support to staff during the closure. In press release, Wilshire’s Vice President of Business Development, Mark Wilson, said, “Wilshire leadership is working in coordination with partner agencies and local healthcare providers to ensure patients and clients experience a smooth transition of care…Staff are being supported throughout the process.”

For more information on the closing, as well as access to any resources before its closing, residents can visit Wilshire’s official website.
