Why a Target at the Galleria?
By an edhat reader
Does anyone know what the City of Santa Barbara chose the Galleria location for the new Target? And why did Goleta prevent Target from opening in the much larger space with appropriate parking? I'm curious if there are legitimate reasons or if it's just more bureaucracy.

Jan 06, 2018 01:18 PMBoth Helene Schneider, and our new mayor Cathy Murillo are visionaries, and know that the Target at this location is good for the future of our town. For every Edhatter who is unhappy about the SB Target, there are 1000s of "regular" folks who are really, really (REALLY) looking forward to the Grand Opening in October. Nearly no Edhatters were looking forward to Chic-Fil-A opening, yet the place is chock-a-block full every time I drive by. If it were another Trader Joe's at the same location, Edatters would be jumping for joy..."Perfect Spot"...."Great Location"...."Fantastic opportunity to get door dings from rude TJ customers"....and so on. Even REXofSB will probably be a regular shopper there after the hubbub subsides....maybe he'll even buy several Target shopping bags to show his pride.

Jan 06, 2018 11:34 AMLook at both Targets in Oxnard. The parking lots are too large for a retail world that happens to be going to online sales. You can usually get free shipping to the store (then don’t have to worry about a stolen package.)
A friend of mine informed me there is a small format Target in Irvine near UCI. She said they sell small home decor items, nothing too big which would require assembly or delivery. They sold most of the usual products, but limit the “excessive/over stocked” items; they now a handful of TVs, top selling CDs, limited amount of toys, but Irvine’s store does not have children’s clothing. They do sell beer and wine at reasonable price.

Jan 06, 2018 10:56 AMWell a mini Target in SB sure won't put Goleta Kmart out of business.

Jan 06, 2018 08:08 AMI am still scratching my head.... in the Midwest now, with several huge Targets available to me, and I can't see why a mini-Target would get anyone in SB excited!! It's either sad, funny, or both.

Jan 06, 2018 09:59 AMSPRIGOFSAGE: It isn't excitement, it's amazement that Target would choose to thrust itself into a location that has EXTREMELY limited parking, plus only one entrance—which can only be accessed in one direction—and said location is at one of the most heavily trafficked intersections in town, which is already strained to capacity.

Jan 06, 2018 07:53 AMWhat IS that huge new building just beyond the old drive-in theater going to be?

Jan 06, 2018 08:44 PMI’ve heard hat huge building behind the movie theatre is going to be a Direct Relief building. Lots of potential jobs there whatever it is but I seriously suspect they'll be relocating current employees from other states to work here.

Jan 06, 2018 07:23 AMThe City of Santa Barbara didn't choose the location - Target and the property owner did. Since the current use of the Galleria, although grossly underused, is retail, no zoning changes needed, just permits for the construction. Parking is adequate (82 spaces) per the City's rules.
Goleta pulled a Santa Barbara trick and made it unfeasible to put a full sized Target on the property in question.

Jan 05, 2018 09:02 PMI think Target will be using the Trader Joe's parking model. ;-)

Jan 05, 2018 06:38 PMI wonder if Target will be looking at how many online orders are picked up at the new store, and factor that into possible local expansion or relocation plans. The Galleria does seem like an odd choice given all the unused parking spaces in the lower Macy's and upper Sears' lots.

Jan 05, 2018 05:50 PMBeing in Goleta, I guess I don't care. As it is, we avoid SB insofar as possible. Traffic madness, difficult parking, aggressive beggars, higher sales tax, and for those few who may care, No Smoking anywhere. Business is continuing to collapse in SB (today it was Brookstone going down), all the while during a record, booming economy. Think there might be something wrong here?

Jan 05, 2018 05:29 PMThat parking lot has at least sixty spaces. More than enough for a mini Target.

Jan 05, 2018 04:02 PMThe question that should be asked is: HOW could the City Permit a Target without enough parking? The answer is the terrible zoning ordinances that the City has Approved. This building is non-conforming with regards to parking. This means it has enough parking for the past use but not the proposed use. The new use REQUIRES A LOT more parking, the City know this, but the City is allowing Target anyway because of a ordinance that makes it easy to place new businesses in inappropriate areas all over town.

Jan 05, 2018 07:57 PMHow many of those spaces will be used by employees?
Traffic will surely backup onto LaCumbre as cars sit and wait for someone to get in their car, fiddle around with their phone for 2 minutes, then back out of a space. Of course there will be those who want to exit the lot and turn left onto LaCumbre Road causing a backup in the lot, which will prevent people from getting in.
I can't wait to watch the chaos that is coming.
