Whittier Fire Views from Western Goleta

By Robert Bernstein

These are some scenes I captured in Western Goleta near Ellwood Mesa, Winchester Canyon and Girsh Park. This is our neighborhood.

The fire fighters in the photo had just arrived from fighting the Alamo Fire and were waiting near Ellwood School for their next orders when I saw them. They said the Whittier Fire had been at 50% containment last night, but it was at less containment today.

The KSBY reporter I met near Winchester Canyon said it was looking worse early this evening than it did last night.

So far we have been lucky with the weather and with the wind speed and direction. For all of the technology, human labor and fire fighting resources and strategy, weather and wind speed and direction are the main factors of what burns.

More photos are available here.
