Whittier Fire Evacuations Lifted

Source: US Forest Service

(GOLETA, CA) – The Whittier Fire is now 87% contained and the fire has not grown for several days. Firefighters have been working around the clock to build containment line and extinguish hot spots across the Santa Barbara front country. Incident Commander Mark von Tillow has advised the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office that it is now safe to lift the remaining Whittier Fire Evacuation Warning.

The following Evacuation Warning has been lifted:

  • Calle Real north to West Camino Cielo, from Winchester Canyon Road on the east to El Capitan Ranch Road on the west.

The following road closure remains in place:

  • West Camino Cielo Road, between Refugio Road and the Winchester Gun Club.

Los Padres National Forest fire restrictions have been implemented and a Forest Closure Order is in effect in the area of the fire. For more specific information go to the Los Padres Forest website Alerts and Notices or call the Los Padres National Forest at (805) 968-6640.

Please be aware that firefighters and fire equipment are working in the area. Drive with caution and be mindful of the possibility of encountering oncoming traffic on narrow, winding roads.

The Whittier Fire will continue to smolder for some time. These “smokers” are well inside the perimeter of the burn and do not pose a threat to the fireline.
