The duck family at Alice Keck Memorial Garden, hatched from eggs last year and appreciated by all who walk in the park, have gone missing as of Sunday 3/10. There were ten of them, and they are suddenly gone.

Where's the Duck Family?

from a friend who frequents Alice Keck: "I walked to Alice Keck yesterday and met this nice guy monitoring the Mother duck from the duck family. She is nesting 10 baby ducklings to be. So she is fine and the father too. Their siblings aren't missing. He said They are foraging all over the neighborhood along with zillion other ducks. So mother of 10 more coming soon. "

Where's the Duck Family?

As of yesterday all 10 of the domestic type Mallards were back at Alice Keck Memorial Garden. This is an eBird hot spot due the Tipuana tipu trees which with the water feature bring in several rarities. Also 20 Mallards at the Bird Refuge yesterday.

Where's the Duck Family?

There was a raft of Muscovy ducks at Alice Keck Park Park. My friend reported back to me with photos, so definitely not Mallard ducks. Don't put it past The City to cull ducks, though. There's a reason why The Bird Refuge once had loads of ducks (lots of domestic Pekin ducks---the white ones) and then, suddenly, no more ducks at all. And nothing to do with the drought, either.

Why would you just assume the post about culling was true? Check it out first.

How AWFUL that the city would cull ducks!!! WTF are they thinking?! WHY would the city cull ANY of our wildlife? They have just as much of a right to live a we do.

The ducklings are still being held at a detention facility at the border while the adults were deported.

All I will say on this matter is that if I were ever homeless and hungry - I could eat some free duck.

Poor little innocent ducks, why would their parents put them in such a position? Shame on those parents for breaking the duck laws! They were told it would happen and they tried it anyway? Smh...

Were they Mallards? Mallards come seasonally then leave.

Mallards are common all year long here and do not migrate from this area. The ones from AK and Canada migrate between there and southeastern CA , Baja, parts of TX and the Gulf Coast states. One can check it all out on Cornell's All About Birds. These are likely at the Bird Refuge or LLC ( Lake Los Carneros ) and like our local Mute Swan will go from one to the other.
