Where Can we Dispose of Sand Bags?
By an edhat reader
Now that it is summer where can we dispose of the sand bags used for the rain? I have 10 of them in my backyard just collecting spiders!

Jun 28, 2018 03:54 PMSpiders need homes, too! We just pile ours up and reuse them for the following Winter. The past few years it seems like the first big rain catches the County off guard and the sand bag stations aren't set up yet. They last around three years before the bags start to fail, and then you can just slide them into another bag....
If you really want them to go away, maybe you can contact which ever County department arranges for that and see if you can return the sand....

Jun 28, 2018 03:54 PMSand can be used to put out spot fires. Damp cotton mops (long string) can be used along with sand to put out small spot fires. We don't know what the future will bring, and all of us should think about how we would survive a wildfire if we had to depend on our own merits. If you can't evacuate, can you fight and hold your own ground? Keep the sand.

Jun 28, 2018 05:02 PMIn our case we just recently moved them just a tad away from
our front door artfully camouflaged amid the landscape...
Yet close at hand should we need. I would suggest you hang onto
them...will personally pick them up if you want!

Jun 28, 2018 05:32 PMWhy not till the sand right into your soil? Generally the soil around here is adobe or clay so anything that adds to the aeration of the soil is an improvement. Include organic content like potting soil with the mix and you'll really improve your flower beds.

Jun 29, 2018 12:08 AMIf the bag gives before we can rebag it, we also incorporate the sand into any cement project we have.

Jun 29, 2018 09:15 AMMake your own ready-mix repotting soil. 1 :3 sand to adobe When you repot, add whatever dirt falls off your plant and some compost if you have it. Loosen up the root system a tad so it doesn't get root-bound and submerge the replant in water to just below the new pot level for an hour or so to get out air bubbles & settle it, set it somewhere to drain and you're done. I use a 5- gallon paint can w/a top to hold my homemade ready-mix.

Jun 29, 2018 10:26 AMGreat idea about slipping old ones into new bags. Home Improvement Center has empty bags for sale..inexpensive. Be sure to store out of the sunlight as bags breakdown fairly easily when fully exposed to UV rays
