What Else Can Curb Distracted Driving?

A driver on their phone in Santa Barbara (Photo by an edhat reader)

Friday morning, at the very busy intersection of State St. & La Cumbre Rd. This woman and the driver in front of her —— at the red light. Both were staring at their cellphones. When the light turned green, each driver was still engaged in looking at their phones.

Illegal use of handheld devices while driving needs to be addressed throughout Santa Barbara. More citations, please. What else can be done?

    • Drinking and driving has been seriously reduced by a combination of criminal enforcement and education along with alternatives. It is absurd to say that citations don’t make a difference and it is almost humorous to excuse the conduct as addiction. Sort of like running red lights or speeding?

  1. More money for cops? Better yet we’d have to move to a place (non-CA) where folks like to talk face to face and don’t give a crap about texting and social media all day including when they’re trying to drive a vehicle. It’s sad, but true. There are so many yo-yo “drivers” around here.

    • BASIC – if that’s not what you meant, then do tell…. what did you mean by saying “move to a place (non-CA) where folks like to talk face to face and don’t give a crap about texting and social media all day including when they’re trying to drive a vehicle.”

You wrote those words, right? Then, you responded to my initial reply shrugging off “studies” and telling me to “go travel” further indicating you believe other states have less distracted driving.

So…. I’m just curious and asking where you got that idea. Pretty simple, even “basic” stuff here.

    • You really gotta work on understanding the difference between an “opinion” and a “fact.”

I know, I know…. it’s so much easier to spin around and say, “oh hey now, I don’t need to back my claims because they’re just ‘opinions,'” but we’ve all seen through that lie….. plenty of times.

Fact: CA is ranked 49% in the USA for deadly distracted driving accidents, so you would not be safer “mov[ing] to a place (non-CA) where folks like to talk face to face and don’t give a crap about texting and social media all day including when they’re trying to drive a vehicle.”
