What Can I Do Now that I Am Vaccinated?

By Dr. Henning Ansorg, M.D., FACP, Health Officer County of Santa Barbara, Department of Public Health
Thank you for choosing to help stop the spread of COVID-19 by getting vaccinated! You are considered to be fully vaccinated two weeks after your second dose of the Moderna or Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine, or two weeks after your single dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
Is it OK to gather with people outside my household who also are fully vaccinated?
Yes, if you and your friends or family are fully vaccinated, you can safely meet outdoors or indoors at your home without masks or social distancing.
Can I go to a restaurant, attend a concert, or sporting event?
In indoor settings outside of one's home, including public transportation, stores, workplaces and schools, face coverings continue to be required regardless of vaccination status.
Generally, keep in mind that no vaccine offers 100% protection. We must maintain caution, especially as we learn more about the variants of the virus and how much the vaccine protects against these strains.
Do people need to continue wearing masks in public?
Face coverings are no longer required outdoors except at crowded events, and for unvaccinated people, when physical distancing cannot be maintained.
Can I travel for leisure or pleasure?
Yes, it is generally safe to travel once you are fully vaccinated. You should, however, wear a mask while using any public transportation, including on airplanes and in airports.
Also, please check the CDC website for recommendations about domestic travel and international travel.
Take these precautions while traveling:
-
Wear a well-fitted mask on public transportation and in public places.
-
Avoid crowds and stay at least six feet away from anyone not traveling with you.
-
Wash your hands often (or use hand sanitizer).
-
Follow state and local recommendations or requirements.
-
Self-monitor for COVID-19 symptoms. If you develop them, isolate and get tested.
Is it alright to see family and friends who don't yet have the vaccine, and socialize without my mask if I am fully vaccinated?
Yes, you can safely mingle with unvaccinated persons from another household without a mask or social distancing.
If you are fully vaccinated and visiting a single household of family or friends who are not yet vaccinated, and are at risk for severe COVID-19 due to age (65 or older) or health conditions, such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease, sickle cell disease, or other specific conditions:
-
All of you should wear well-fitted masks and stay six feet away from each other when indoors. If possible, hold the visit outdoors or in a well-ventilated space to reduce risk.
Mixing and mingling two or more households that have people who aren't yet vaccinated raises the risk for getting the virus that causes COVID-19 for anyone who isn't vaccinated.

Jun 13, 2021 10:21 PMGo back to living life normally. Have friends over for dinner without masks. Hug them. Let them in your house. Hug them good bye as they leave.

Jun 13, 2021 10:33 PMThis is a poorly-timed article, because in two days much of that info will be obsolete. As of the 15th (this Tuesday) so many of those regulations will be voided for vaccinated people (per the CDC & Dr Fauci), such as: Wearing masks in stores and other public places, and keeping 6 feet away from other people. Looking forward to getting back to almost-normal!!

Jun 14, 2021 07:28 AMWe're going to continue to do what we have been doing for the last few weeks, right? The anti-maskers and anti-vaxxers will continue to be maskless, and immune-compromised people will wear masks inside. And stay away from Alabama and Mississippi with low rates of vax.

Jun 14, 2021 10:44 AMCHIP- I second you sentiment. Protracted Covid, the economy, fires etc. etc. have rendered everyone continually super stressed powder kegs on hair triggers. It is heart warming to me to see the compassionate posters and makes it easier for my stressed being to not descend into vicious posting.

Jun 14, 2021 11:32 AMI can see why there were surges in other locations before the vaccine was widely distributed. Baby steps turn into an avalance. We are fully vaccinated, except for the young kid. We went from hyper aware and fully masked, to unmasked outdoors except in crowded places...slowly letting go of the masks as time went on. Now? Unvaccinated kid seeing friends (indoors!) and doing swim and doing camp. There are 32 active cases in SB county. I'm not going to make my 9 yo wear a mask indoors with the one kid who is over to play.

Jun 14, 2021 11:54 AMLMG, by fully vaxxed you mean 55 % as of 2 days ago?I guess you and I have different ideas of what fully vaxxed means. In my old school that mean something much higher.

Fleeced is what wuz dunn to us.

Jun 14, 2021 09:17 AMIts unfortunate that the Governor of our great State of California is creating division between vaxxed and not vaxxed individuals for no apparent reason. This is discrimination. California is a show case state for communism. They're seeing how much they can take away from us before they impose more restrictions. Masks dont work! If there was a pandemic, I do believe our Goverment would have distributed N95 masks to everyone. Newsom is still keeping children muzzled in schools. Unvaxxed discriminated. No more mention of herd immunity? I smell a rat.

Jun 14, 2021 10:49 AMTALULAH3 - I don't think it's the Governor "creating division," it's the people themselves. I've never once listened to what he has had to say, but I know myself to keep my distance from those who refuse to get vaccinated. It's for safety reasons. Even though I'm vaxxed, my kids aren't yet and I don't want them getting COVID. Pretty simple and straight forward. I don't need the Governor to tell me to avoid risky situations that may affect my kids' health.

Jun 14, 2021 10:05 AMThis is bogus information - I've seen two of these same news pieces recently. The timing is odd because the State is going full normal (or almost) tomorrow.
I'm going full normal tomorrow regardless what the author said, and so is everyone else I know.

Jun 14, 2021 10:54 AMApparently there was an immune compromised patient in Israel who had Covid for 7 months during which time it mutated over 30 times. What vaccine protocol keeps up with that? We are all almost terminally tired of this extreme hygiene protocol, but it is way to soon to assume the vaccines are working. Science still takes time and we will know more in a year or so. No one likes being told to be patient, including me!

Jun 14, 2021 06:07 PMBodyBoarder73: I think we’ll see more of that unfortunately. Unhinged people won’t change overnight even though you’re safe and they’re safe with the vaccine indoors or outdoors without a mask.
If someone wants to keep wearing their mask I honestly don’t care. But if they fly off the handle because I’m not wearing mine then they need both a chill pill and a serious reality check.
