I live on Ortega Ridge and my neighbor has recently had their hammock damaged twice by something.
Attached is their photo showing the damage in their completely fenced in yard. Does anyone know what kind of animal would cause this damage repeatedly?
Wood rats and racoons love fibers for weaving into their nests.
I see oaks, and around here that = wood rat.
They even build a escape nest up in the oaks.
Bears like dish soap and weird stuff like that.
A bear would have ripped that whole thing down.
I see what you’re saying and that does make sense. Why would a bear bother with a non-food item? Good point. Wood rats love the oak woodlands too.
I don’t think it’s a homeless person (due to lack of paraphernalia). Absolutely beautiful yard BTW. I love the shade and the tree lighting.
I’m going with a bear. They seem to like to thrash around with stuff more than say a mountain lion. Not too many animals around here could do that. Maybe a disgruntled neighbor? Set out a cam and see!
We live on a ranch and find it very fun to put out a night camera and see the “nightlife” going on while we sleep. Worth doing to solve your mystery!
Yes, put out a wildlife camera and show us! I’m going out to check mine now – usually the highlight of my day.
If this type of damage is happening overnight, it’s a safe bet to surmise it is something other than a rat or rats. Must be a bear. Please encourge your neighbor to set up a camera and let us know when you’ve solved the Mystery of the Vexing Vandalism.

Chupacabra or garden gnomes, only possibilities.
I do like the game camera idea though! Got lots of weird critters here.
