Whale in the Santa Barbara Harbor
By Ian S.
Saw this whale from Stearns this morning. He was hanging out in the same spot in the middle of the channel.

Mar 20, 2022 04:10 AMFalse Killer Whale. Not an Orca. Orcas have very tall fins even as juniors.
False Killer Whales have been sighted all over Southern California this week. There is video on YouTube,

Mar 20, 2022 09:28 AMThat looks like a white saddle patch to me. Orcas have that, not False Killer whales.

Mar 20, 2022 09:48 AMCould the white spot be an injury? Hit by a propeller? Just a guess.

Mar 20, 2022 10:14 AMNot an Orca. It is a baby grey whale. Check Condor Express website for more photos and ID. I lived in Seattle and no way is it an Orca.

Mar 20, 2022 08:35 PMHi, Cat wrangler, giddy up... I'd just glanced earlier and white spots on baby grays are not common and I've lived in Santa Barbara for 55 years, scuba diving for 15 and going on pelagic trips for 20 on the Condor, Conception diving and my own Achilles dive boat...and yes, not an Orca, but there was a Minke yesterday. Don't know why the down votes.

Mar 21, 2022 10:25 AMTagdes, i saw the whale several times yesterday when i was fishing out on the sandspit. i couldn't tell what it was TBH. My buddy owns the dive shop over at the Landing so I may hit them up in a few hours. Several on shore claimed it to be a baby grey, but i thought perhaps a minke? saw a mako on the surface of fools anchorage yesterday morning, enjoying the sun, swimming slowly on the surface from the rock jetty out towards the harbor entrance. that was cool to see...

Mar 21, 2022 11:15 AMHey. Yes I looked at Minke photos and thought that was a possibility. I heard there are a lot of Orcas in Monterey Bay so looks like there will be a good blood bath there as they separate the baby grays from their moms. I've also heard (not verified) of Orcas launching themselves on the back of the Channel Islands (heard from Island Packers years ago) to grab seals. (I can't downvote anything so wasn't me). Now is the whale still there???

Mar 21, 2022 02:36 PMNone of the anti cruise ship people complaining about raw whale sewage in the harbor? Close the beaches or put a diaper on it!!
