Way Back When: WWI Propaganda Film

By Betsy J Green

During World War I, Santa Barbara author Marion Craig Wentworth wrote a play called “War Brides” about the German government’s policy of encouraging soldiers to marry and father a child before going off to battle. Her play was staged in New York, and made into a movie in 1916 by the Herbert Brenon Film Corporation. (There are no known copies of this film.)

Betsy’s Way Back When book — 1919 — is now available in local bookstores and at Amazon.com. This is the sixth book in her series of the history of Santa Barbara, one year at a time. Learn more at betsyjgreen.com.
