The Santa Barbara Lighthouse, located on the Mesa about where Shoreline Drive curves past La Mesa Park, was photographed for the local paper this month. This is probably the last photo of the lighthouse, which had been erected in 1856. [Spoiler alert – the lighthouse would be destroyed by the June 29th earthquake.]

The article mentioned that the lighthouse keeper, Mrs. Harley A. Weeks, was notified by the U.S. Government that “she will be relieved of duty within a month, although her successor had not been named.” Weeks had only been the keeper since her husband’s death two weeks earlier.
