WAY BACK WHEN – Soon-To-Be-Famous/Infamous Hotel

Photo Credit: Californian Hotel (Santa Barbara Morning Press, June 18, 1925)

Dateline: May 1925

“The opening of the new Californian Hotel on the corner of State and Mason streets in Santa Barbara was celebrated last week. The new hotel, situated one block from the ocean and one block from the [train] depot, is a four-story brick structure, containing 100 rooms, all with either shower or tub bath.” – Los Angeles Times, May 24, 1925

[Spoiler alert – this hotel would be badly damaged in the June 29 earthquake, and its photo appeared in newspapers around the world.]
