“Seventy-five percent of Santa Barbara girls find a natural outlet for energy in sport, a canvas of the State College and State Street shows … Statistically speaking, of 50 girls questioned, 25 expressed a preference for tennis; 15 enjoyed hiking, five favored horseback riding, and the remaining were divided between swimming and basketball …

Why do girls, California girls especially, go in so strong for sport? In the words of one State College girl, ‘It’s the climate … one just couldn’t stick around the house all the time.’”
