A Bicycle Parade! The 1926 new year began with a “Monster Bicycle Parade” for kids. They gathered at State Street and Cabrillo Boulevard at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 2.
At 10:00 they began cycling up State Street to Anapamu Street. After reaching Anapamu, they rode east to the new Peabody Stadium at the Santa Barbara High School.
There, they were entertained with “safety first” demonstrations and prizes were awarded in several categories:
- Boy Scouts with the neatest uniform
- Oldest and youngest riders
- The school with the most riders participating*
- Best costume
- Most comical makeup
[*Spoiler alert – Washington Elementary School won the prize for the most riders. The school was located at the southwest corner of Anacapa and Arrellaga.]

For some reason, I never imagined that many school kids would have bicycles, back in 1926.
1926 was a big year for bicycles.
