Way Back When: Moviemaking in Montecito

The “Flying A” was not the only movie studio making movies in our area. In March 1919, “Motion Picture News” magazine reported that folks from the Clara Kimball Young Film Corporation were in Montecito filming “The Better Wife,” a society drama.

The movie was set in England and Europe, but according to the magazine, “Most of the exterior scenes were made in the millionaire colony at Montecito near Santa Barbara where the company spent two weeks.”

(This is one of the 64 silent movies I have discovered that were filmed in Montecito.)

Betsy’s Way Back When book — 1919 — is now available in local bookstores and at Amazon.com. This is the sixth book in her series of the history of Santa Barbara, one year at a time. Learn more at betsyjgreen.com
