There had been a Catholic Church named Our Lady of Sorrows on the northeast corner of State and Figueroa streets – until the earthquake in June damaged it beyond repair.

Now, a design for a building to replace it was taking shape. The building complex was originally called the Calle del Sol, but was soon given its present name – La Arcada.
