Warnings for Maskless Gatherings?
By an edhat reader
My husband took his usual walk [Tuesday] morning, masked and distanced, from Figueroa to the Mission, where he saw large groups of people together, maskless.
Shouldn’t the police start issuing warnings to people? Are these people all visitors? When, and if they leave, will we have another increase of cases?

Dec 30, 2020 09:12 AMSince when was it against the law to gather outside among members of your "bubble". Maybe the "Karen" culture is getting too big for its own britches.

"h. Nothing in this Order prevents any number of persons from the same
household from leaving their residence, lodging, or temporary
accommodation, as long as they do not engage in any interaction with (or
otherwise gather with) any number of persons from any other household,
except as specifically permitted herein."

Dec 30, 2020 09:17 AMI’m responsible for my own behavior, not that of others. Don’t try to police others, ok?

Dec 30, 2020 10:14 AMSo if you rob someone, that is okay? I wouldn't want to interfere with your constitutional rights.

Dec 30, 2020 10:19 AMYou are responsible for your own behavior, which includes not exposing me to your spittle and other internal particulates you spew from your face holes when you speak, eat, or otherwise expose your mouth and nose in proximity to me. I have met you on the street, and I have met you in line at the grocery store, as you wait with your mask around your neck until you go inside. I have seen you on the bus removing your mask to eat while you RODE ON THE BUS . So, be responsible for your own behavior until it infringes on my safety, health, and maybe existence. Infect the others who feel as you do, just leave the rest of us who care to accept science alone.

Dec 31, 2020 04:20 PMOpposumBoy: We tried the “personal responsibility” response option for months. Clearly it failed miserably because some people don’t care enough or are misinformed by our Balkanized, discredited media and government. Healthcare workers are working their tails off, the least we can do is follow the rules until the vaccine reaches enough vulnerable people for society to go back to normal. Anarchism, like Communism, doesn’t work in reality.

Dec 30, 2020 09:29 AMThe problem is, law enforcement officers have to take an oath to uphold the constitution. It’s kind of amazing, but that oath has become the only check against the police taking on virtually unlimited power. Based on the public health order, the police could stop and search anyone who was not out alone and “socially distanced”. They could also stop, search, and arrest anyone out after 10. They could also enter and search people’s homes with the slightest hint of suspicion someone might be visiting from another household. Naturally, the police would confiscate, impound, and arrest based on what they discover during a “COVID stop” or a “COVID search. If only we could convince the police to disregard that pesky little oath, just imagine how much safer we could be...

Dec 30, 2020 10:16 AMCan someone yell fire in a crowded theatre and not be arrested for causing the ensuing injuries? If not, I guess there are limits on freedom of expression. Lots of people like to cite the constitution but not that many seem to understand that there are limits.

Dec 30, 2020 11:04 AMIf you can equate inviting friends over or going for a walk to yelling fire in a crowded theater, you will have created a police state. Be careful what you wish for, that unchecked law enforcement power could be used against you in ways you never expected.

Dec 30, 2020 11:40 AMThose actions are quite equivalent during a pandemic, since they endanger the health and safety of your fellow citizens. Freedumb has limits.

Dec 30, 2020 01:01 PMCHIP - I don't believe it's the police we need to be concerned with as much as it is members of the government that issue the "orders/rules" in question. It's the "unlimited power" the government is trying to achieve we should be concerned about. Is a "public health order" a law subject to scrutiny by our Constitution? I don't think so. I disagree police will be stopping, arresting, searching, or taking any other action based on a COVID issue alone. Many law enforcement agencies have reported they will not enforce violation of COVID imposed rules.

Dec 30, 2020 09:23 PMAll wrong, Chipster. The public health orders are advisories, not laws passed by the legislature. Enforcement can only happen if government enacts laws, or ordinances, as some City Councils have done. Otherwise, there is nothing that compels police to enforce them, which is why a lot of departments refuse to do so. Even then, police have wide discretion, and typically will not cite if the person is cooperative. If a person is aggressive or threatening toward the police officer, other laws come into play and can result in detention, search and possibly arrest, but the charge won't be for failing to wear a mask or failing to socially distance. Even in jurisdictions with fines in place, the offense is a cite-and-release infraction, not a crime.

Dec 31, 2020 07:25 AMPublic health emergencies lead to valid uses of power by State and Local government. I guess 335,000 dead people, millions of long term injuries, and the cost of all that is not important to you? Give us the numbers where you think the gov can get involved and if we're unlucky enough, maybe we'll hit one.

Dec 30, 2020 09:35 AMSadly this type of irresponsible behavior is contributing to the ongoing spread of COVID and dragging out the closure of schools and businesses. People that choose to gather maskless in large groups are showing reckless disregard for human life and the economy. They should all be ashamed of themselves. Unfortunately, there won’t be any serious enforcement and those fools won’t get that their actions have consequences unless they or someone close to them ends up in the ICU or dead. Also, I love how the same people who scream that businesses should all be allowed to be open also have snarky comments that others should mind their own business about social gatherings. Eye roll...

Dec 30, 2020 01:42 PMAlso, Karen is a general term that can be applied to anyone. If you're calling the cops on your neighbors when something doesn't involve you, you're being a karen. No need to feel oppressed for white ladies, they are fine i promise you

Dec 30, 2020 03:20 PMStop using the name Karen. Call them buttinskies, busybodies, nosy naggers, something descriptive. No reason to malign a perfectly decent name.

Dec 30, 2020 06:24 PMThe whole "ok karen" is so juvenile... the fact is that a lot of people aren't being careful and we are now seeing a surge that we haven't had to cope with locally before. We are seeing it because of people gathering and while it is probably more due to people getting together for Halloween and Thanksgiving indoors, it is still impacting ALL of us in some way or another. Yes, it is disconcerting to see people gathering right now. Unfortunately there is nothing that you can say or do because they feel like it is ok and they will just do it anyways and be rude, aggressive and defensive if you say anything. That's why the problem is as big as it is, people like that. Just gotta avoid them "Karen" and live your life in the way that you feel most comfortable with.

Dec 31, 2020 07:22 AMJust a way to dismiss someone's valid concern about an issue as something they don't think is important to them. But it comes back on you when you post about something that is important to you. I guess that's what you want if you keep doing it.

Dec 31, 2020 08:29 AMThink and feel, please. Each one of our behaviors affects others, not just ourselves. Your freedom may take my freedom away and vise versa. Please honor and respect all our health care workers. Our misbehavior impacts them and we do not care. They can not keep up with all the covid patients in their care. They go home exhausted, exasperated and sad about our selfish, uncaring natures. Why, why, why won't we honor the simple request to wear masks and think about keeping a distance from others? If the inconsiderate get covid, the health care worker treats you without asking if you were acting responsibly or not. Hospitals do not have enough space so, like a war zone, make-shift field tents are set up and care is rationed with the most likely to survive being put to the front of the line for treatment. Too many Americans have become me-first and me-only to the extreme and they call it FREEDOM. Complete freedom can only be had if you are entirely alone on an island without another human around you, ever! Good Luck! Please think, feel and care for and about others not just yourself. Your loved ones and others in you life think, feel, and care about you.

Dec 31, 2020 08:51 AMPerhaps the people who are so insistent about their (maskless) freedom should make sure that they remind the ER personnel about how they feel when they're admitted.

Dec 31, 2020 03:06 PMThe rest of the world is looking at our country in disbelief. While I believe the majority are taking the health crisis seriously to protect their neighbors and family, the actions of the selfish and delusional minority render a collective response useless. I don’t use those words lightly. If you don’t know the dangers of Covid and how to do your part after nearly a year, you are selfish, delusional and ignorant. Downvote if you want, your opinion is uninformed trash.

Dec 31, 2020 08:15 PMWhat can one do other than observe the recommendations? We have from the start. I'm thinking this virus escaped the lab way before anyone realized, and it cannot be eradicated, any more than the common cold. It will run its course, maybe mitigated by vaccines, but not before many more deaths and disabilities. I think emphasis should be placed on protecting the most vulnerable, and each of us can help a little bit there with special attention to social distancing, masking and isolation, as difficult as that is. It will take time and patience.
