Vista Del Monte sent a letter to residents on November 14 announcing that they will transfer all skilled nursing residents to Valle Verde, or "a care center of your choice" by March 2018.

They will convert the skilled nursing facility to additional memory care rooms. This means that Vista Del Monte is no longer a true continuing care facility guaranteeing that couples can stay together in the same location as their needs change.

Their website has not been updated with this new plan, so anyone considering the move to assisted care for themselves or others should take this into consideration.

They have contracted with Valle Verde to partner with their facility. It is less than a mile away and it is a bigger facility with extra room. They will have transportation between facilities. Vista del Monte is going to expand their memory care facilities.

I wonder how this was approved by the various agencies that regulate these facilities. Valle Verde is probably considered a comparable facility with regard to quality of care, but this move is likely to be very upsetting to long time residents who thought they would spend their final years at Vista Del Monte.

Do the senior citizens have to pay more dollars for the Valle Verde care? Isn't Valle Verde at the top of the food chain in terms of what well-healed seniors are willing to pay? Maybe Valle Verde will wait for a year or two, and then increase the cost for transfers from Vista Del Monte.

Just toss these elderly and sick senior citizens around, at will, and expect their cooperation...after all, they don't have much fight in them, do they. What does "a care center of your choice" mean. One you search around for, dragging your oxygen and walker, to find something affordable.

Please don't try to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.

This has been approved by the Department of Social Services Continuing Care Branch and the Department of Public Health so I don't believe these nightmares will happen.

Warehousing of our elderly is an ugly business. And do take a peek behind the curtain. That anticeptic welcome by $miling $taffers is just a facade.

I don't know what facilities you might be referring to, but my mother was in assissted living for over 2 years and the staff were invariably caring, kind individuals.

The skilled nursing facility at Vista del Monte was no great shakes to begin with--okay for a brief recuperation, but not so good for long term ailments. I hope the one at Valle Verde is better. The loss of immediate proximity for skilled nursing is unfortunate, but the expansion of memory care facilities is much needed. All of these places are so dang expensive. But don't slam the staff; most of the front line nurses and aides are good, caring people. They are just spread too thin.

Vista del Monte is a CCRC offering independent living, assisted living services, outpatient rehabilitation services at our Vista del Monte Fitness and Aquatic Center, and a specialized memory care neighborhood on site. Most residents agree that the recently announced plans to convert the 29 bed skilled nursing care center to expand memory care at the community makes the best sense for current and future residents. Our partnership with The Village at Valle Verde, located less than a mile from Vista del Monte, offers skilled nursing and rehabilitative care and includes transportation and coordination to assure that residents who need 24-hour skilled rehabilitative care are returned to their home at Vista del Monte as soon as possible. Casa Dorinda is probably top of the food chain for continuing care followed by Samarkand, Valle Verde and Vista Del Monte. One mile doesn’t sound like a great distance, but for someone who lives in an assisted or independent unit and visits their spouse in skilled nursing it will definitely be an inconvenience. Also, it is not uncommon for someone to spend time in skilled nursing after a hospital discharge before they return to their independent or assisted apartment. The appeal of a continuing care contract is to minimize the number of different moves required as one’s needs change. None of this reflects on the staff, the staff at Vista Del Monte are the best of the best. It’s the management by Front Porch Inc. that is questionable.

KEW, I don't know what places you are talking about specifically but they can't all be painted with the same brush. My mother-in-law has her own apartment at Monte Vista, invites us for great meals in the dining room and has a wide choice of activities to choose from during the day. She also was able to bring her cat, I see others walking their small dogs. A good friend is at GranVida I in Carpinteria and has his own room with a view, good meals in the dining room and an option for activities. When I visit there are people sitting around the tables reading, playing cards and generally visiting and chatting. Staff is great and caring. I had a dear friend at Casa Dorinda for 15 years and she got excellent care, moved from a private apartment to extended care at the end.

Why would it be the responsibility of the government to take care of us as we age? Family, community and sound financial planning are much more reliable than a government made up of imperfect fellow humans. Compassion and care begin at home, and I can't think of anyone who would willing want to be a ward of the state in their elder years. Remember the days when families took care of their own? Currently helping out an older relative, and being childless, we are making sure we have the resources we need when we get to that point. What we can also do is re-think our options: several people moving in together and sharing expenses, or an older person taking in a younger room mate with reduced rent in exchange for help around the house. Lots of viable options if one thinks creatively.

It's wonderful when families take care of each other, we always have for generations in mine. However, I've worked taking care of people with Alzheimer's and there comes a point with some when it is absolutely impossible to care for them at home. They often don't understand how to cooperate in any sense of the word, and can be extremely violent and dangerous in some cases, needing constant round the clock care. A dear friend was put into a home this year because his elderly daughter no longer had the strength to help when he'd fall or needed changing (incontinent). It was an extremely expensive step to take. No good reason the government can't take care of our most vulnerable citizens without other resources.
