Vigilant Hawk

Just after sunrise [Monday] morning I spotted one of our "locals" surveying his/her domain from on high.

This hawk (or one like it) has visited our yard before - screaming into the shrubbery to pick off breakfast in the form of a House Finch or Titmouse.

While we are anxiously hoping a mating Western Bluebird pair will choose our backyard box to nest, we worry that this fearsome predator may await them.

Bummer! Bluebirds have their standards. My yard didn't pass muster, either. I went to your website, holy macaroni, you are a REAL photographer. Those celebrity photos, Colin Firth and Clint Eastwood, absolutely wonderful. Now I understand the lighting on your red-shouldered hawk photo. No accident.

TWOSCOOPS - Alas, they have not been seen by me in several days. Still hoping they will select our digs! I do, however, have a photo of a male feeding his bride from several years ago. It can be viewed at MagicalLightPhotography dot com under "Wildlife."

Agree with all!! Photographing birds isn't as easy as you make it look. More! More!

I agree with TWOSCOOPS, appreciate your wonderful bird photos. We had a big rosemary bush in the chicken coop, birds liked to go in there. A hawk came down and went after one when a hen fluffed her feathers and charged at the bush, hawk took off in a hurry.

Very cute, FLICKA, that even a mighty hawk can't take a hen peckin'.

Chuck Cagara, I'm becoming of fan of yours. Love your bird photos and stories, especially the bluebird nesting box drama. You're our Roger, but instead of reporting crime, you're reporting on wild birds. Birds deal with predators, it's a fact of their lives. It's amazing they keep trying to reproduce and live normal lives.
