This is just tragic. We heard cars racing around earlier on El Colegio, shortly after we heard the sirens. The initial law enforcement assessment is reckless driving (which usually means excessive speeding) & if that's the case, that's a BAD road to be doing that on.
While UCSB is spending tons of $$$ building new structures, the infrastructure (such as roads through campus) goes unattended. That segment of road has either potholes or root bumps that can send a speeding car slightly airborne. Bottom line is that ain't a road to speed on.
I ain't blaming UCSB for this accident, just pointing out that if reckless driving was in fact the cause of this, that road could be likely added to the equation.
Regardless, tragic loss of life, in a place where many come to begin their lives. My condolences to the families & friends of the deceased.

Racers use this straight away for hitting top speed but anyone who has driven this part of the road knows these are the worst roads around. Pot holes the size of sink holes. Hitting a pot hole at excessive speeds easily could have caused this. This is also within 100 yards of where a young man crashed his motorcycle 3-4 years ago into the bus stop. Young kids + fast vehicles + horrendous road conditions are a recipe for disaster.

UC need to ban students from owning assault cars..

Or limit students to cars with 100 hp. This never happened in VW Bug days when
they had 45 hp engines.

But it should be easy to require students to take a Car Driving course. ie Dumb Bell
Drivers Ed?

Or ban cars from Campus and IV. Park and ride bikes? Take the bus.
ie "Rapid" Transit?

And at least fix the pot holes. Should be a POT HOLE HOTLINE number.

But perhaps they need to use more Roundabouts. Traffic Circles. Cities like LB
even have them in old neighborhoods. Imagine SB with no 4 way stops!! Just plant
a tree in center of intersections.

Name them after victims of city planners.

Creekmoe - as for the "And at least fix..."
... the Goleta site says "24-hour answering machine (805) 961-7570", but more importantly it states: " Remember, if this an emergency, dial 911!" OK! That'll get someone moving, hopefully t fix the issue, but not get you in trouble for using that # for "Frivolous purposes"?

So upon further looking into the pictures in Noozhawk & the Daily Nexus, I think I have a clue as to what the hell happened here. Check out the pictures & look @ the placement of the vehicles.
The closest to the intersection is the silver BMW, next is the red vehicle & on it's side against the trees is the supposed vehicle that caused the crash, the white Nissan.
All the cars are facing west on the exit road from campus, which is the road I mention full of bumps from sinkholes to tree roots.
There's no way the offending vehicle could've been traveling west, given the trail of carnage & the reported involvement.
From a statement in the Nexus comments, from the uncle/aunt of the BMW driver (deceased), the BMW was hit by a vehicle traveling @ a high rate of speed eastbound on El Colegio. If you look @ the damage in the Nexus picture, it seems to be on the passenger side of the car. This indicates the silver BMW was probably turning left off of Stadium Rd. to go east on El Colegio.
The red car looks like it was hit head on by the white Nissan, which ended up flipped around in the trees behind the red vehicle.
So how did the offending vehicle, the white Nissan, end up from the eastbound to west bound lanes? If you look closely at the picture & verify it w/ Google Map view, that intersection (which is a 3 way) angles from the IV side of El Colegio in a southeast direction, which would put the travel of the offending vehicle (white Nissan) & the impacted vehicle (silver BMW) in the westbound lane, this makes it to where the white Nissan hit the red vehicle & went over it's top then landing facing west.
In order for that to happen, that Nissan had to be traveling @ a HUGE rate of speed eastbound on El Colegio, but I can say w/ experience that some go on that road WAY fast.
In some earlier reports it was said there were ejected individuals, which means somebody wasn't wearing seatbelts & my guess is they came from the offending vehicle (white Nissan).
I ain't an accident investigator, but I know this area like the back of my hand & given the provided pictures & comments from witnesses & such, I think the scenario I described is most likely what happened, but let's let the real traffic experts rule. I'm just offering a local's eye observation, given on what's currently available.
Regardless, still freakin' sucks. Just as these kids are gettin' ready to have finals, some graduate or just go off on vacation for the summer. This just sucks all around.

Tagdes, not that it really matters but look a little more and you'll see there are multiple commenters (not Henry) guessing about potholes and sinkholes plus frequent racing as contributors. I lived in IV for 15 years and still ride my bike across that intersection. I've never seen racing there. And the road is currently in good condition.

Eastbeach, I was just reinforcing what Henry and I stated actually happened> I totally ignore all the fools that always claim the problem is the roadway, Caltrans or County Rds. I've been to court more than once for both drunks and speeders getting off for this because of a couple well know local lawyers.

copied and pasted from the Daily Nexus article comments:
"We were at the intersection on Stadium Rd on red light when it happened. Not sure if the white care is a Nissan but that is the the car that hit the trees and is in between the trees in the picture. Not sure if the Nissan ran a red light or not we could not see from that angle but the Nissan was driving at a high rate of speed an may have hit a curb at some point causing him to loose control and hit the center divider close to the waiting cars at the intersection and when he hit that center divider curb the vehicle launched in the air and started to spin hitting the stationary BMW and then the red car behind it. We called 911 the police were there quickly while we were still on the phone describing the accident. There was also campus work vehicle with orange lights that was there close to the time the accident happened. We were shaken up just crazy to see a vehicle flying through the air, those stationary cars had no chance. Prayers to all that were involved, can’t imagine what the families are going through."

SBSAND - that link takes me to one one of the many "Roger the Scanner Guy" post! Thanks! I was all over that one trying to pry out the details of "Zebra one"? as to the driver that caused the crash I believe that's the "scuttlebutt"! Same name, same auto...

My heart goes out to the family and friends who lost their loved ones due to this criminal who was allowed to use his assault weapon - a car - to murder innocent people. How did he get bail (75k) 2 years ago after reckless driving, being arrested for almost killing people with his car, an expired license and fleeing the scene after being pursued by police? This is absolutely utterly tragic!

He had a long rap sheet, goes back to childhood and being in and out of Juvenile hall. I wonder if the police were on the scene so fast because they were pursuing him and whatever other gang members were in the car with him. Were they dealing drugs in IV? There is a lot more to his story than we will find out I'm sure. He did leave behind 3 daughters that were born in the past 2.5 years though and it looks like he was an involved father.
