The Ventura Police Department is proud to announce the launch of its first-ever Mounted Patrol Unit, featuring four trained horses and experienced officer riders. This new initiative aims to strengthen community engagement while enhancing public safety in high-traffic areas throughout the city.
The Mounted Patrol Unit will be deployed for proactive patrols focused on crime deterrence, crowd management, special events, and parades. Residents and visitors can expect to periodically see mounted officers in key locations such as Downtown Ventura, the Ventura Promenade, the Ventura Harbor, and local parks, both during the day and at night. In addition to their operational value, mounted officers foster more approachable, face-to-face interactions with the public.
“Mounted patrols are not just effective, they’re memorable,” said Chief David Dickey. “This timeless, community-focused approach encourages dialogue, builds trust, and reinforces safety in Ventura’s most vibrant spaces. We’re especially grateful to the dedicated officers who are partnering with us to launch this program and who generously offer their own horses, care, and equine expertise to make it possible.”
The officers and their horses completed a 40-hour Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certified Basic Mounted Patrol course in April. The curriculum included horsemanship, patrol tactics, grooming, and the unique functions and limitations of a mounted unit. In addition to the state-required training, Ventura PD will continue to provide ongoing training to reinforce skills such as obstacle navigation, desensitization, and scenario-based exercises to ensure readiness in dynamic urban environments.
Each horse is individually owned by its assigned officer, who provides daily care, feeding, grooming, veterinary services, and stable accommodations. The Ventura Police Department supplies the protective equipment and all required training to maintain the unit’s preparedness and professionalism.
The Ventura Police Community Foundation generously contributed $10,000 to help launch the Mounted Patrol Unit. All future equipment, training, and horse-related needs are planned to be funded through community donations. Those wishing to support the unit can make a donation at www.
