Guys renting a U-Haul to burglarize cars and houses? I will speculate that they are from out of town. Speculation, one step or maybe even two steps back from assuming. Just the first unexamined thought that came to mind. Probably wrong!

Roger - Talking to a friend who states CT and IL use two letters to start their license plate format.

Roger, you have an interesting life. And now you can add cannibalism to your list of life experiences! You gotta write that book.

There is a basis for the conclusion, although the UHaul up on E. Mountain Drive angle throws it into limbo.
A lot of theft crimes go on along the RR corridor in Montecito between Montecito Sanitation District and the Miramar and it isn't the housed people doing it.
The jails and prisons are releasing people who immediately join the ranks of the homeless, the jobless and for some, their only vocational skills revolve around theft and drugs.
An old family friend lives in the encampments when he is out of prison. His family members have died or moved away, so he has no home to come back to when he is released and no one wants him at their home anyway because things start to go missing, his friends are all convicts. He is in his 50's now and his chosen vocation is thief. His mugshot appears here regularly as he coninues to re-offend. To get $100 a day ($12.50 an hour) he has to steal stuff that cost you $1000 and he's going to break a door or window to get in and that'll cost you too. He will always be my friend, but I'm not going to act like he's not a walking disaster if he is living near your house

Interesting. There is a very active homeless outreach project going in Montecito, and they've been steadily getting people off those tracks. Maybe you should refer your friend to them?

Edney, thank you for telling it like it truly is. Where I live, just across the way from that horrible tent city in IV, we get the worst of the worst. They'll try to "bro down" with you, but it's not out of friendship or kindness, it's to assess what kind of sap one is and figure out a way past their defenses. Once that's done, too late, things go missing or worse.
I've personally seen some here in IV get burned by the tent city crew, just because they showed compassion. To the tent city denizens, compassion is a sign of weakness & they will capitalize on said weakness in a heartbeat.

Sounds like one of our lovely "houseless neighbors" in action. Gotta do something else when not starting fires, right?

RYPERT - uh, read your own comments. THAT is how I know you're assuming. Do you know what that word means?

SACJON, assume? Why do you assume I'm assuming? I will bet dollars to whatever that once caught, you'll see these guys are of the "houseless neighbors" ilk.
The "housed" criminals are easy to find, given identifiers such as license plate, identification, previous history of law breaking, etc.
I'll tell you what, if it comes out that these aren't "houseless neighbors" I will then apologize for my assumed assumption. Until then, I'm sticking with the given assessment and from what I hear, it's no assumption on my part.

RYPERT - why do you assume the thieves were homeless? Plenty of "housed" criminals out there. No need to jump to baseless conclusions.

Meth... it gives you the power of invisibility. You can go commit crimes and you won't be seen. It also helps conceal the getaway vehicle as well.

Someone has to be a real dumb bass to drive a U-Haul box truck around while they commit burglaries...Especially in the day time.
