Vandenberg Space Force Base, in coordination with NASA, is set to provide a comprehensive mission overview for the eagerly anticipated SPHEREx (Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization, and Ices Explorer) space telescope. This informational session is scheduled for Thursday, February 20, at The Crucible Innovation Lab located within the base.
The event will feature Dr. Denton Gibson of NASA’s Launch Services Program as the designated SPHEREx Launch Director, who will introduce attendees to the upcoming launch campaign. Following his presentation, Dr. Jamie Bock, the mission’s Principal Investigator from Caltech and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, will delve into the scientific objectives SPHEREx aims to achieve. A Q&A segment will wrap up the session, providing an opportunity for further engagement on this groundbreaking project.
Set for no earlier than February 27, 2025, SPHEREx’s launch from Vandenberg SFB will mark the beginning of a monumental two-year mission. The space telescope is tasked with conducting the first exhaustive survey for water ice, among other vital life-forming compounds, across the Milky Way galaxy. Through its advanced observations—in wavelengths beyond the perceptual capacity of the human eye—SPHEREx will map the entire sky and examine hundreds of millions of galaxies and celestial objects.

Drawing from the idea that the pursuit of water is crucial in the search for life beyond our solar system, NASA’s SPHEREx mission is poised to cast new light on this endeavor. Mounted on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, SPHEREx will explore molecular clouds rife with interstellar dust grains coated in frozen water, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and more. These icy particles in the cosmos form the building blocks for planets and stars and signify the primary reservoirs of water in the universe.
The innovative mission aims to build upon discoveries made by its predecessors, such as the James Webb and the retired Spitzer Space Telescopes, which identified the presence of these key compounds in numerous celestial bodies.
SPHEREx stands out as the first observatory designed to carry out a wide-scale galaxy survey, potentially unveiling the origins of water and other vital ingredients for life across the vast expanses of space.
