Vandenberg Air Force Base to be Renamed Space Force Base

Vandenberg Air Force Base near Lompoc will be officially renamed Vandenberg Space Force Base this coming Friday.

A ceremony will take place to redesignate the base and the 30th Space Wing as Space Launch Delta 30, under Space Operations Command, United States Space Force, according to base officials.

Officials state the new organization will allow squadron commanders to report directly to the Space Launch Delta 30 commander creating more efficiency.

The area was established in 1941 by the U.S. Army as Camp Cooke with the 5th Armored Division arriving in February and March 1942.

In 1956 the Army transferred the base to the Air Force as the United State’s missile development progressed. Two years later the base was renamed Vandenberg AFB, in honor of General Hoyt Vandenberg, the Air Force’s second Chief of Staff.

  1. Hard to kill any government program that has multiple companies profiting, no matter how ill-conceived it was. And with our local politicians being on the bandwagon, too. Tell me again how the USAF was not able to complete this mission with their resources?

  2. Chico, if you don’t understand why you should support your position with facts, because of your bias, it would be a waste of my time to explain it to you. Luckily I could just copy and paste most of your comment.

  3. If it sounds militaristic it is because it is a military base! There are a huge number of ICBM silos there which guarantee that it is an early target if it ever hits the fan. Yeah I feel safer too….
