150 goats have taken up residency at Valle Verde Retirement Community in Santa Barbara.

The heard of goats will be on campus for about a week to clear brush and grass to improve the fire clearance along the edge of the community. The goats are from 805 goats and they offer a sustainable way to manage your property and eliminate invasive weeds and brush.

Goat grazing is a sustainable, ecologically friendly way to manage Valle Verde’s Campus and eliminate invasive plants and noxious weeds.

A friend who raised goats told me he had heard if goats eat poison oak and you drink their milk you'll become immune to the poison oak. He had been so allergic to the stuff he would break out all over if anyone even mentioned poison oak. He took two goats out to eat the shrub, drank their milk and has never been bothered by poison oak again.

Does anyone have any references for hiring smaller number of goats for individual homeowner? Last time I looked into it, they were only available in larger numbers for large expanses and unaffordable for about a 1/2 acre of brush clearance.

Goats are truly great for this work. Unless they are starving, they won’t graze down to bare earth nor will they damage mature trees and taller brush, but they will deal with most of what’s much over ankle high up to 3-5 feet off the ground depending on the breed which is just what you normally want for fire risk mitigation without erosion problems.

The only time the goats can be dangerous, Flicka, is when they take a smoke break in an undesignated area that hasn't been chomped & verified safe. :-)

Best way to go "organic"! The Jesusita Fire was started by a weed whacker setting off a spark, burned something like 200 homes. Goats won't start a fire.

It wasn't the guys working on the previous day. It was two mountain biking guys who thought they'd clear the trail and people around here know who they are. Stilson ended up paying out, but the guys who started the fire got away with it.

Yah... still having trouble with that explanation. They were weed whipping the day before... nevermind the picture of the guy hauling ass (full out running with a backpack) down the trail about 15 minutes before the fire started, that a neighbor of the area took a picture of and posted on edhat. Yep, it was the guys who were working the previous day, that created a spark, that punked around for 24 hours....

@Phantom - GOAT is a common online acronym for Greatest Of All Time. As an example, in an online tennis forum thread about Roger Federer someone might post the reply "GOAT". Here it was a sort of double entendre :)
