The U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the National Guard arrived at a Carpinteria farm on Thursday morning with several militarized vehicles and numerous officers.

Around 11:00 a.m., edhat began receiving numerous reports from readers about what appeared to be a large military presence at Foothill Road and Casitas Pass. The group blocking that intersection as well as the intersection of Foothill Road and SR-150, making a large section of roadway impassable.

Witnesses reported a caravan of armored vehicles and unmarked police vehicles with masked men in plain clothes, some wearing ICE or police vests, and a group of people in military camouflage, all carrying weapons. Additional reports state helicopters have been seen over the area as well.

“It looks like they’re going to war on our street,” one protestor stated.

The Glass House Raids

The unmarked vehicles and unidentified group of armed people targeted Glass House Farms at 5601 Casitas Pass Road in Carpinteria. The farm, owned by Graham Farrar, is one of the largest cannabis producers in the county.

Video and photos from edhat readers and 805 Immigrant Coalition show people with hats and masks detaining workers at the cannabis farm and searching the area.

A similar raid took place at Glass House Farm’s second grow-house in Camarillo, located at the intersection of Laguna and Las Posas, appearing to be a targeted enforcement of a single business.

A Glass House Farm’s worker stated the group did not have legal warrants issued to conduct such an operation on private property, although this has yet to be confirmed. But they did state that ten workers were detained and transported to an unknown location.

Several witnesses stated they saw some DEA identification for the federal Drug Enforcement Administration. Cannabis is legalized in the State of California but on the federal level, cannabis remains illegal. The federal government classifies cannabis, along with heroin and cocaine, as a Schedule I drug.

“It’s very hard to make a distinction between agencies here. Are they ICE, Police, DEA, Military, contractors… who are these guys?” a protestor stated.

Protests Erupt in Response to Raids, Smoke and Flash Bangs Used

Nearby farmworkers, residents, and motorists stopped at the blocked intersections to protest the ICE raid.

In Carpinteria, the protests started small but grew by the minute reaching over a hundred people at the intersection of Foothill Road and Casitas Pass. Videos and eye witness accounts shared with edhat portrayed a peaceful gathering of locals vocalizing their frustration and anger. “Keep ICE out of Carp!” was chanted numerous times.

A video shared with edhat shows a group of protestors standing in front of a line of armed agents and National Guard members. The protestors raised their hands and chanted “peaceful protest” when a series of shots were heard. The crowd dispersed amidst screams and crying as smoke filled the area. There did not appear to be any physical threat to agents or the National Guard.

Witnessed reported that without warning an ICE agent through a flashbang, also known as a stun grenade, and smoke canisters into the crowd. A baby and a mother were reportedly in the exact area these were thrown, according to witnesses.

There was no reported presence from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office, although CHP did arrive to help clear the roadway for passing vehicles. Local officials were amongst the crowd including Carpinteria City Councilmember Mónica J. Solórzano, County Supervisor Roy Lee, and Representative Salud Carbajal.

Carbajal approached the agents as the crowd chanted “let him through” as he tried to calm the crowd. Carbajal stated he is a Congressman and wanted to be let through to speak with officials. It’s unclear exactly what happened but agents could be seen putting their hands on Rep. Carbajal as they denied him entry. He released the following statement after the incident.

“Today, I was at Casitas Pass Road in Carpinteria where ICE was conducting a raid using disproportionate displays of force against local farm workers and our agricultural community,” said Congressman Salud Carbajal. “As a member of Congress and representative of the Central Coast, I have the right to conduct oversight and see first-hand what ICE was doing here. As soon as I walked up, I was denied entry and was not allowed to pass. This was completely unacceptable. There’s been a troubling lack of transparency from ICE since the Trump Administration started, and I won’t stop asking questions on behalf of my constituents. I will be demanding answers from the Department of Homeland Security to find out who they detained and where the detainees are being taken. And let me be clear: these militarized ICE raids are not how you keep our communities safe. This kind of chaos only traumatizes families and tears communities apart. They are also a gross misuse of limited resources and a betrayal of the values that define us as Americans.”

Rep. Carbajal stated a small child was hurt during the stun grenades and smoke bombs while he held up a piece of shrapnel from the incendiary devices.

As the incident wrapped up, numerous witnesses stated the agents, again without warning, set off another round of flashbangs and smoke canisters into the crowd out of the window of their vehicles as they drove off.

In Camarillo, a more intense situation unfolded as protestors were reportedly met with rubber bullets, flash bangs, and smoke canisters. According to witnesses, several people were detained at this location as well. Some were placed on a U.S. Marshals bus that left in a convoy of vehicles.

The Ventura County Fire Department reports three people were transported for injuries, but details were not immediately available. The protest is still ongoing at the time of this article’s publication with tensions reportedly escalating.

  1. So, the National Guard don’t wear masks, just the plainclothes guys? Why? Are the ICE “agents” even legit or just volunteer Proud Boys?

And why TF do they need the National Guard to raid a pot farm in Carp?

    F8CK ICE.

    • Sac- They need them because of the response to what they’re doing? Is that a real question? The National Guard is not allowed to use masks. They probably should, though. The others are government agents. Why does this need explaining?

This place has not changed a bit.

      • Nonsense. The need for there to be accountability from law enforcement in a free society outweighs any potential for harm to LEO. As well, the claims from the Trump admin are totally laughable. Show me a credible news report of an ICE agent or their family member being assaulted outside of their normal law enforcement duties.

Cops get threatened, judges get threatened, you want judges to start wearing masks and ruling anonymously from the bench. The fact is that you get off seeing these guys attack people with all their military appearance–because you WANT to live in a dictatorship so long as the victim isn’t you. Utter garbage.

      • and you seem to completely miss the point as usual. however, knowing you, as an instigator, i’m not very surprised at your comment. If they need masks to hide themselves, then what they are doing should be questioned. you don’t get that? i mean..really??? you also don’t seem to get that non identified masked gunmen is nothing more than a terrorist by definition. your turn….

  2. hey folks, i just called the SB County Sheriff Dept near there. I spoke with dispatch. This is NOT ICE. This is Homeland Security. There is a warrant. The sheriff department was tipped off and they are aware. But it is not ICE. They are detaining people, but this is not an immigration raid. That is all i know….

  3. This is what they do in North Korea, China and Russia, Trump is destroying our democracy. Impeach the felon and make sure the spineless enablers never get to run for office again. This is deeply un American. Masked men, no identification, unmarked cars, use of force and no due process. Impeach the felon . Melanie his own wife worked here illegally on a visitor visa. Maybe ICE wants to kidnap her and put smoke bombs in any one that stands in their way. Disgusting, pathetic and has to STOP.

  4. This is a noteworthy loophole:
“Cannabis is legalized in the State of California but on the federal level, cannabis remains illegal. The federal government classifies cannabis, along with heroin and cocaine, as a Schedule I drug”

Kristi Noem is the Secretary of Homeland Security. When questioned about children drowning in the recent TX floods, she said that’s an issue for the state, not the federal government. She delayed FEMA search and rescue in TX for three days. Trump wants to end FEMA because he claims it’s up to the states to solve their own problems.

So, the states are to take care of their own issues. So why have the federal armed goons invaded Los Angeles? They aren’t there at the behest of the mayor or governor–neither want them there. The citizens certainly don’t want them there.

And now the armed goons are here. Without warrants. Disrespecting peaceful protesters. Hauling away working folks to who-knows-where. All the while, cannabis is legal here. If the government is indeed leaving issues to the state, then there should be no problem.

ALL OF THIS IS NOT OK. MAKE DUE PROCESS GREAT AGAIN.

  5. 1. That’s not shrapnel
    2. Don’t have your kids near any type of protest
    3. The DEA was involved so it’s probably more about the cannabis than the workers
    4. Stop being a whiny bunch of justice warriors

    • STONER – the DEA was used as means to gain “lawful” entry. There was absolutely no DEA involvement, investigations or charges involved in this. The local law enforcement was lied to by ICE and DHS.

These are facts. I know people who work at these farms. Easily verified if you actually cared.

      Stop supporting racism.

  6. Over 50,000 Mexicans die every year, largely due to guns exported from the U.S. Over 50,000 Americans die every year, largely due to fentanyl imported from Mexico.
We are in the midst of a War that historians will call it, something like, The Fentanyl Wars.
All these ICE raids are just a prelude to what comes next. The American Military taking on thr cartels.
Mexico’s government is an incompetent Kleptocracy. It allows some of the most wicked organizations in human history to operate with impunity within its borders.
We are already at War! Please, get off your moral soapbox and wake the eff up.

  7. For the MAGA cons that have nothing better to say except “it wasn’t peaceful” here are some facts for you even though I know you’re allergic to them. The protest in Carpinteria was 100% peaceful. ICE fired flash bangs and smoke bombs with no warning and for no reason other than to be dbags. This article focuses on CARPINTERIA and it mentions tensions were escalating and protests ongoing in Camarillo at the time they posted it. It’s almost like MAGA hates to read as much as they hate reality.

  8. 10 juvenile undocumented immigrants were detained, 8 of whom were unaccompanied.

No democrat has the right to accuse republicans of a lack of transparency, ever.

Violence against law enforcement is unacceptable. If you don’t like the laws, change them. This is so reminiscent of the way people treated soldiers returning from Vietnam. They took out the anger and frustration with the Vietnam policy on service people who were doing their job.

I implore my liberal friends, please try to understand that there are factors other than just “Orange Man Bad” at play.

  9. The President of Glass House Farms, the cannabis farm that federal immigration authorities raided in California on Thursday despite protests, has donated thousands to Democrats in California.
Co-founder, president, and board director Graham Farrar, who self-identifies on social media as residing in Santa Barbara, California, has made numerous political donations to the Santa Barbara County Democratic Central Committee’s federal political action committee and Rep. Salud Carbajal, D-Calif., according to Federal Election Commission records.
According to California public campaign finance records, he also donated $10,000 to California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom in 2018, and his most recent public political donation was to California Democratic Assemblymember Gregg Hart in July 2023.

Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Rodney Scott tweeted that the farm is “now under investigation for child labor violations” and the Department of Homeland Security told Fox News on Friday that nine unaccompanied children in the U.S. illegally were rescued.
“So glad our law enforcement could rescue another child,” DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin stated.
Glass House Brands said in a statement that they complied with the federal warrants issued.
“Yesterday, Glass House Brands received immigration and naturalization warrants. As per the law, we verified that the warrants were valid and we complied. Workers were detained and we are assisting to provide them legal representation,” the company tweeted

    • Graham is a known d-bag, regardless of politics. He donates to candidates that want to decriminalize marijuana but he has also made pro MAGA and pro Trump comments in the past. So wouldn’t be surprised if he’s a trump voter. It goes along with his character as a human. With that said, his farms did not deserve to get raided like a freaking military operation.
DHS claiming they found a bunch of kids but aren’t providing any proof smells like a lie. This got wayyyy more media attention than they wanted it to (they had to helicopter in supplies for agents because it was taking 10x longer than anticipated). So now they’re coming up with a reason to make this fascist enforcement seem justified. And what to MAGAts fall for every time, save the children! So they’re claiming it was a child labor thing, which I call bulls***. Provide proof or shut up. DHS doesn’t give a F*** about kids. They rip them from their parents arms, leave them alone and deport their mothers, throw them in cages. Wake the f*** up KaLameo

    • KAPO – “It is a matter of law. Only the left is making this a racial issue.”

Then please explain why the hundreds of thousands of white undocumented workers living in large cities are not being targeted at all.

  10. Salud is one of the people responsible for this .. See him at this peaceful protest pretend he doesn’t know why they’re doing this and charge the line and get bounced back , he is one of them you fools . Some of the government elected or not, created all this mess and are putting a big spin on it trying to make you believe they didn’t know anything and that they’re trying to help us – ya rite. Pretty soon everybody will figure this out

  11. How does no one seem to acknowledge that this place appears to be a hotbed of corruption and inhumane labor practices? While everyone focuses on the protesting and the resulting conflicts, why is it so hard to admit that this business needed to be raided and investigated? People on the streets try to prevent law enforcement from doing their job and then wonder why such a display of force has to be present to protect their mission? Salud making all the headlines by feebly attempting to prevent this raid is typical. This business owner is in bed with the democratic leadership on a local and state level but people applaud (or ignore) this and wish they could continue hiring children to work in a weed farm? It’s clear that people, at least from reading comments and cardboard signs, don’t even know what’s going on and assume this is just a bunch of amped up meat head militia men out bounty hunting anyone with brown skin for sport. Every other civilized country has borders and enforces immigration law. We need immigration reform, and the ensuing correction for past administration’s (D and R) will be messy, but it’s necessary and our country will be better off when legal immigration is managed well.
