Unannounced Test Missile Launched Thursday Morning

Update by Vandenberg Air Force Base

On Thursday, Dec. 12, 2019, at 8:30 a.m. Pacific Time, the U.S. Air Force, in partnership with the Strategic Capabilities Office, conducted a flight test of a prototype conventionally-configured ground-launched ballistic missile from Vandenberg Air Force Base, California. The test missile exited its static launch stand and terminated in the open ocean after more than 500 kilometers of flight. Data collected and lessons learned from this test will inform the Department of Defense’s development of future intermediate-range capabilities.

Did anyone else hear or see a potential missile launch from Vandenberg Thursday morning? Windows rattled around 8:30 a.m. but haven’t seen an official alert from VAFB.

  1. Try getting your facts straight. 1. It was announced, perhaps not with that much warning but mariners were advised to stay clear of the VBAFB coast this morning. 2. These type of tests have been banned by international arms treaty for thirty years—–until Trump decided we needed more missiles and bombs.

  2. Waste of money by a banana republic that would rather spend hundreds of billions on military hardware to end up in a scrapyard than taking care of its own people. Google “aircraft boneyard” and say with a straight face the military isn’t blowing all of our tax money on garbage.

  3. Dumb. IRBMs are destabilizing because with a relatively short range, their flight time is just a few minutes, little warning. They need to be based in the enemy’s neighborhood, but we have few suicidal allies willing to host the things. The notion that they’ll be armed with conventional warheads is totally unverifiable, also destabilizing. Just dumb.

  4. RHS, I think you and others fail to realize 1) Russia was already violating that treaty and already developing/testing IRBM’s. 2) If the US allowed it’s forces to weaken over any significant amount of time Russia and China will without a doubt take the opportunity to at least expand their territory into neighboring countries (Russia already did this in Crimea and tried/trying in Ukraine with little to no international consequences, China is currently doing something similar with the island airfield/,military bases they’re building in the South China Sea). And don’t think they’ll just stop there either.

  5. If Trump did not end the treaty, you would be saying the exact opposite. In that case, you would argue Putin wanted us to abide by the treaty while he violated it, and that Trump was soft / did his bidding. If Obama took the same action Trump did and ended the treaty, you would say nothing. I don’t think it’s the treaty or the missile launch you are concerned about. I think you simply hate Trump.

  6. Don’t deny that this is a direct and dangerous consequence of having Trump in the WH. He has abrogated treaties that are meant to keep peace and has then pushed the aggression of the US to this sort of sabre rattling stuff. This country was already (Obama led) committed to spending $1 trillion on “improving” our nuclear arsenal. Now we can up that to $2 trillion and bring the world right up to the edge of disaster again. Thanks to that awful presence in our top office.

  7. Sam the dog: It is pretty lame to say that “Russia made me do it.” Not unlike elementary school stuff. IF Russia was doing bad things the solution is to bring this to the attention of the world and seek condemnation of the behavior from other nations. The idea that we just walk away and engage in even more irresponsible stuff is dumb and risks the vast majority of the world’s peoples who did not agree to let Putin or Trump determine this stuff.

  8. They ARE doing bad things and the international community isn’t doing anything. They took over another country! You are so blinded by your hatred for Trump you missing the positive things he’s accomplishing (albeit while being an A -hole) and are incredibly naive about Russia.
