UCSB Student Dies of Accidental Overdose

Nikola Kapamadžin, a fourth year UC Santa Barbara mathematics major in the College of Creative Studies, passed away on July 5 in Isla Vista. He was 20 years old. 

The Santa Barbara County Coroner ruled his death an accidental alcohol and drug overdose in an autopsy report.

Sheriff’s Deputies discovered Kapamadžin at a home on 6793 Estero Drive and determined that he was dead at the scene. The results of the toxicology report showed his blood alcohol concentration was 0.217 at the time of death, and he had cocaine, benzoylecgonine, alprazolam, MDA and MDMA in his system, reports The Daily Nexus.

Benzoylecgonine is the main metabolite of cocaine. MDMA, also known as “Ecstasy” or “Molly,” and MDA, known as “Sally” or “Sassafras,” are both stimulants and psychedelics. Alprazolam is better known as Xanax and is used for anxiety. 

Foul play is not suspected. 

Kapamadžin was born in Serbia on August 12, 1996, and moved to the United States with his family at the age of four. His friends described him as a brilliant “ray of light,” energetic, and generous.
