UCSB Arts & Lectures announced its 2021-2022 season during an outdoor gathering at the Santa Barbara Historical Museum on Tuesday evening.
Focused on hope and justice, the new season includes two new series, Justice for All and Soul of America. The Justice for All series confronts the inequalities that shape our policies, institutions, and lives; and the Soul of America series features homegrown marvels from jazz to bluegrass and beyond.
The “Creating Hope” program initiative began this past spring with a deep commitment to offer programs that bring hope to the campus and community.
“We’re conscious that things are rapidly changing and our wish is to accommodate as much of our community as possible. An at-home live stream option will be available for many events this season for those of you who cannot attend in person,” said Arts & Lectures Miller McCune Executive Director Celesta M. Billeci.
Regarding COVID-19 safety, event organizers stated protocols for attending in-person events will be developed in conjunction with evolving state, local, and university health guidelines.
The season kicks off on October 10 with former U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development and presidential candidate Julián Castro, followed by music from the soulful roots trio The Wood Brothers (Oct. 12), the first installment of Danish String Quartet’s Doppelgänger Project (Oct. 14), Arturo O’Farrill and the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra’s Fandango at the Wall with The Villalobos Brothers (Oct. 15), and environmental activist Paul Hawken on Regeneration: Ending the Climate Crisis in One Generation (Oct. 20).
Other notable events include the author and social commentator Roxane Gay (Feb. 25), Tony Award and Emmy-winning Broadway star John Leguizamo (Feb. 2), Street Dance Phenomenon Memphis Jookin’: The Show Featuring Lil Buck (Mar. 8), Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater (Apr. 13-14), the Joffrey Ballet (May 11-12), bestselling author and Pulitzer Prize-winner Elizabeth Strout (May 13), and a holiday spectacular featuring pop duo She & Him (Dec. 2).
Series subscriptions are on sale now for attendees to receive up to 25% off and the “Create Your Own Series” is also available for a savings of 10%.
