Two Proposed Roundabouts for Montecito

I was apprehensive about the round about that they put in at Los Carneros a few years ago. But now I think that it is a great solution. It seemed to take a long time to build but well worth it. It will be tougher to mitigate the construction problems with these new ones.

Hello everyone in EdHat land! AQUAHOLIC is back, it's been awhile! Cheers! Good news! I like roundabouts! Olive Mill Rd. is a particularly good candidate for one, look forward to smooth sailing through there in the future.

People using the road make mistakes (like running stop signs and red lights), always have and always will. Crashes will always be with us, but they need not result in fatalities or serious injury. Modern roundabouts are the safest form of intersection in the world - the intersection type with the lowest risk of fatal or serious injury crashes - (much more so than comparable signals). Modern roundabouts require a change in speed and alter the geometry of one of the most dangerous parts of the system - intersections. The reduction in speed and sideswipe geometry mean that, when a crash does happen at a modern roundabout, you usually need a tow truck, not an ambulance. Visit the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety for modern roundabout FAQs and safety facts. Roundabouts are one of several proven road safety features (FHWA). The life saved may be your own. https://safety.fhwa.dot.gov/provencountermeasures/roundabouts/ https://safety.fhwa.dot.gov/intersection/innovative/roundabouts/ Modern, slow and go, roundabout intersections have less daily delay than a stop light or stop sign, especially the other 20 hours a day people aren’t driving to or from work (it’s the #2 reason they’re built). Average daily delay at a signal is around 12 seconds per car. At a modern roundabout average daily delay is less than five seconds. Signals take an hour of demand and restrict it to a half hour, at best only half the traffic gets to go at any one time. 'At best' because traffic signals must have the yellow and all red portion (6+ seconds per cycle) for safety, and modern roundabouts do not. At a modern roundabout, drivers entering from different directions can all enter at the same time. Don’t try that with a signalized intersection.

I agree there are many positive impacts and challenges of this proposal, the latter of which is less about the size of the circle, but the fact that most American drivers have NO IDEA HOW TO USE TRAFFIC CIRCLES. The discussion next week should include input from the DMV to encourage licensed drivers to revisit the handbook. Having lived and/or driven in DC, London, Asian and Latin American cities that use roundabouts as a way of life I am quite familiar with their efficiency and safety benefits -- which may only be realized when the driving populus is aware of how to use them.

There would have been a 3rd freeway lane through Montecito years ago but some of the residents put up such a powerful fuss it got canceled. Now they are paying the piper.

Broken record but here goes... The removal of the Cabrillo southbound 101 onramp by Caltrans is largely the reason that Coast Village Rd. is such a mess in the first place. Maybe, just maybe, Caltrans can mitigate the mess they in fact created. But as someone who was recently rear ended in the Milpas roundabout... I wonder.

Too small. There's no doubt there'll be trouble at the Jameson/101 exit position at 2 o'clock in the roundabout. It needs more room. Much more room.

As long as bicycles and peds can get thru there, it's fine. Montecito fought the freeway for decades, and there's not much money left to perfect these roads.

Keep it small and slow-moving so that people can walk around it. Most of them are completely pedestrian unfriendly. This will cut off CVR from the Biltmore for walking.

The trouble with roundabouts in this area is that the engineers make them way too small. Roundabouts need space to function properly, without a good amount of space cars tend to stack up, which defeats the purpose. Yet engineers still try to fit roundabouts in spaces that are way too small.

1. what the heck is the shape of that san ysidro one? 2. the process of them putting in the olive mill roundabout is going to absolutely suck. i wonder what the plan is for traffic control and mitigation and how long it will take? the third lane through montecito and carp is long long overdue. hoping that happens soon, as well as the potential on-ramp at cabrillo

Construction and traffic impacts will absolutely suck. Lets hope that the 192 is rebuilt before these roundabouts are constructed.Wonder if they'll propose building both in parallel? Or serially?

Roundabouts are great tools to solve these problems, EXCEPT most people can not drive or use critical thinking skills. The backup at the Hot Springs roundabout is pretty severe and these will even be worse. Prepare for a huge Montecito battle over the roundabouts.. IF you can not believe that the third lane of the freeway has not been completed through Montecito yet.. You will be saying the same about these roundabouts in about 20 years. The freeway expansion through Montecito is the biggest no-brainer of all times.. BUT, it still goes on and on while more and more air pollution and congestion pours through Montecito as a result. I guess more money does not always equate to more brains.

The problem I gave often with that roundabout is people using the wrong lane where there are two lanes in the circle. People get in the outside lane but want to stay in the circle, people get in the inside lane and all of a sudden decide they need to exit. I’ve had countless near misses despite the fairly obvious signage pointing to which lane you need to be in depending where you want to go

I remember riding my bike through that intersection when there were stop signs. It was always a little unnerving!

I only use that roundabout at Hot Springs and Coast Village about once a week, but it has worked really smoothly for me, no backups. And I remember when there were stop signs, and just like at Olive Mill, people seemed unable to recall who had the right of way. It was often a mess.

Great idea. Olive Mill definitely needs it. That intersection is a mess. I would say San Ysidro not so much.
