Solvang and Carpinteria have been featured among the eight most welcoming towns in Southern California on a new list by WorldAtlas

The list highlights destinations that are renowned for their warmth, hospitality, family-friendly celebrations, and small-town charm.

A Slice of Denmark in Solvang

Solvang, the Danish-inspired town in the Santa Ynez Valley just inland from the Pacific, has secured the top spot on WorldAtlas’ list. With its iconic windmills, half-timbered buildings, and bakeries, Solvang offers a slice of Denmark in California.

Copenhagen Drive, one of the town’s focal points, features multiple restaurants, bakeries, and festivals.

Solvang’s calendar of events adds to its appeal, WorldAtlas noted.

The month-long Julefest during the winter holiday season is one of the most well-known events that draws crowds. The event includes a tree lighting in Solvang Park, a Saturday parade with marching bands through the downtown, candlelight tours through Copenhagen Drive, a ‘Maker’s Market’ similar to European night markets, and other traditional holiday activities.

Julefest was featured as one of America’s most popular Christmas markets by Winna in November 2025. This year, Julefest began on November 28, 2025, and will end with the Solvang Tree Burn on January 9, 2026.

Once winter ends, Solvang prepares for Solvang Century, one of Southern California’s longest-running rides, according to WorldAtlas.

In the fall, Danish Days sees the town celebrating with Aebleskiver breakfasts, Viking-themed events, and an Old-World craft market, WorldAtlas noted.

Beach-Town Appeal in Carpinteria

Carpinteria’s beach-town appeal is a crowd puller, with crowds gathering for its warm, gentle water and shoreline, according to WorldAtlas.

Every October, the city hosts the California Avocado Festival in the downtown area for three days. Linden Avenue turns into a bustling neighborhood filled with music across three stages, food vendors, and abundant guacamole to feed all visitors.

Car enthusiasts unite in summer for the Rods & Roses event, which showcases over 200 vintage cars before rolling into Carpinteria’s Independence Day Parade. The next Rods & Roses event is scheduled for June 27, 2026.

Winter is marked by the annual Festival of Trees, which showcases 24 trees decorated with holiday themes and celebrates the festive season with traditional holiday events.

Other Destinations

The WorldAtlas list includes six more destinations, each known for its warm and inviting culture, events, and festivals that draw people from all over.

The other towns mentioned in the list include:

  • Avalon, Santa Catalina Island
  • Lake Arrowhead
  • Palm Springs
  • Del Mar
  • Borrego Springs
  • Laguna Beach

As visitors seek authentic and community-centric experiences, the welcoming spirit and blend of traditional and local pride highlight the charm of Southern California’s small-town destinations.
