Two motorists suffered major injuries after their vehicles rolled over on Highway 101 near Los Alamos early Friday morning.

At 1:57 a.m., Santa Barbara County firefighters responded with two engines, a battalion chief, California Highway Patrol, and ground ambulances to the woodchopper area south of Los Alamos on Highway 101.

One vehicle was traveling southbound, lost control and rolled over. A second vehicle traveling behind tried to avoid the initial accident and ended up rolling their vehicle, landing in the northbound lanes.

The northbound and southbound lanes of Highway 101 were temporarily shut down.

A male was the driver of one vehicle, a female was the driver of the other vehicle, both complained of major injuries. One patient was transported to Marian Medical Center and another to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, reports Fire Captain Dave Zaniboni.

California Highway Patrol is investigating this incident.
