Two dogs in distress were rescued from the Whittier Fire burn area near El Capitan Canyon on Sunday.

Around 12:30 p.m., a crew of line paramedics were patrolling near El Capitan Ranch Road area when they came across two dogs in distress. One appeared to be a lab-mix, while the other was a German Shepherd, reported Santa Barbara County Fire Captain Dave Zaniboni.

The dogs were dehydrated and very hungry. The crew provided food and water, which the dogs readily accepted, said Zaniboni.

They were able to get the dogs down to the roadway where County Animal Control was waiting to transport them to the shelter. There were no reports of missing dogs, and crews are unsure how long they were out there, said Zaniboni.

The dogs are now safe and are being cared for at the County Animal Shelter.
