A vehicle accident sparked a brush fire near the Gaviota Tunnel shutting down both sides of Highway 101 on Thursday afternoon.

Just after 3:00 p.m., Santa Barbara County fire crews responded to a vehicle accident near the S curve. Somehow the vehicle sparked a fire in the center divider of Highway 101. County firefighters were assisted by crews from the Los Padres Forest and a US Navy Fire unit that was traveling back from assisting with the fires in Northern California.

The brush fire, also called the Tunnel Fire, is being held at 2 acres as crews make good progress, despite heavy winds, said County Fire Public Information Officer Mike Eliason.

Two helicopters were making air drops, but have since been released. The north and southbound lanes were shut down for a few hours while fire equipment took over the roadway. As of 4:30 p.m., California Highway Patrol opened up one lane in either direction, although traffic is still slow in the area as fire equipment takes place in the number one lane, said Eliason.

Crews on the ground have halted forward progress and are working to extinguish remaining hotspots. They will remain on scene for a while to monitor the fire and winds. A fire investigator is on scene attempting to locate the source of the fire.

There were no injuries involving the vehicle accident, the driver was assessed at the scene by paramedics. No other injuries were reported.
