Tuesday Rain Clouds

Someone was looking at her phone, noting how it reported clear sky while we were all remarking on the pouring rain we were watching out the office window. Quite a surprise. Anyway, great pic - looks like a giant tsunami coming at us over the island. Driving home at sunset we got a fleeting momentary glimpse of the moon amid sunset-tinted clouds next to the rain-freshened mountains. By the time we pulled over, the moment was gone. Such is life in paradise, eh?

Nice photos, especially the first one. Those were pretty fat rain drops while they lasted.

Tuesday Rain Clouds

I made notes for an out-of-state friend.

Tues. 2/15 4:10 p.m.:

Wind woke me at 4:30 this a.m.
It's been howling and whining, the house creaks, a few loud bangs that I have not yet explored.
Around 2:30 pieces of branches were blowing around the house.
And... the rain stopped after less than 10 minutes.
and the mountains are visible already. All in less than an hour. Wind blew the rain horizontally into the mountain-facing windows. And the sky is partly blue over the mountains now.
And the local flock of crows has been screaming, flying, mobbing for hours, very visible out the window and very loud.

It's in the high 40's in several places, ocean side of Turnpike/Hollister and Mission Canyon, among others. Only 1 or 2 readings anywhere in the 60's, it's around 51 here.
Dropped 11 degrees around here from 3:30 to 4 p.m. Gusts are only 21 -24 mph per close weather stations. THAT is hard to measure, stations on La Cumbre get no wind, report single digit wind.

Two-one hundredths of an inch of rain. LOL!
Just frigging weird all the way around! Nice to have some weather.
It was this:
"On Tuesday morning, the impetus for the system, a lobe of high-altitude cold air, low pressure and spin, was diving southeast in the skies over California. That will shift toward the Four Corners and transfer its energy by Wednesday to a zone of low pressure in the Texas Panhandle — low pressure that will then slide through the Ohio Valley." washington post

Well, That was exciting! Closest lightning is at Santa Susanna range between Fillmore and Moorpark.
And now? Zero wind. The quiet is very noticeable. It's very relaxing, I can feel my body say 'aaah.' "

LA & Orange County got more of it, some places got hail, wind & cold.

Pasadena had enough hail that kids were playing in it like snow. Some snow around Victorville/Tejon Pass.

Tuesday Rain Clouds

I was lucky enough to watch the day, for hours, from fully clear and almost warm through the end of it before nightfall, all of it, from a big window facing the mountains. It was stunning to see the mass come over the mountains, it looked like that photo over the ocean. I imagined and hoped it was pouring rain in the mountains. A few places got measurable rainfall, but it was in the 2-3 hundredths of an inch range. :-(
When the clouds were advancing, and partway over the mountains, a full beautiful rainbow was visible. Then the clouds came in. It was a great experience! Just wish we'd gotten more than a pavement-wetting rainfall.
