A triple fatality head-on traffic collision took place on SR-166 near Cuyama late Sunday afternoon.

At 4:21 p.m., Santa Barbara County firefighters responded to the vehicle accident one mile west of Cuyama. On arrival, they found two SUV's had collided head-on. Inside one vehicle was a male and a female, estimated to be in their 40s or 50s. Inside the other vehicle was a single male in his 20s, reported Captain Dave Zaniboni.

All three motorists were pronounced dead on arrival.

A CALstar helicopter and ambulance were canceled en route. California Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of this incident.

Shortly before 4:30 P.M. two SUVs were in a head-on collision on Hwy 166, approximately a mile west of Cuyama. First-responders reported three dead upon arrival. I heard it from SB County Dispatch Center via the scanner.

Yes, therealbebe; Been here about 40 years, including navigating every road in the county. I know full well how remote the Cuyama valley is. CHP does great work; I'm just suggesting maybe we need more coverage, not that it would have made a difference in this case.

Totally agree and if additional law enforcement resources are needed for something serious we can always get inter agency assistance from Kern Co. sheriffs.

Interestingly, it took CHP half an hour to arrive on-scene. County Fire and Sheriffs were requesting CHP for traffic control starting at 4:35 P.M. Maybe we don't have enough CHP officers?

Maybe. Could also be the fact that this local is very rural. Have you been there? Do your homework before you type.
