Tree Removal Near Peabody Stadium

By an edhat reader
The SB High School "stadium improvement project” includes killing most of the trees (176 trees) currently surrounding the stadium, including mature California Oaks and an extensive grove of mature Eucalyptus trees, one of the few remaining intact groves in Santa Barbara.
These trees are home to wildlife including Red-tailed hawks, yellow-rumped warblers, owls, Cooper’s hawks, hummingbirds, Monarch butterflies and other living things, according to the Dudek Co. study/report assessing the environmental impacts of the project. Mature trees also clean the air, prevent erosion, provide shade, moderate summer heat through respiration, and help to retain moisture in the soil.
Opinions can be voiced to the members of the School Board at (805) 963-4338

Sep 08, 2017 06:00 PMOutrageous. I am going to call the School Board tomorrow and voice my opposition to this tree removal.--------------------- And this posting confirms my belief that Edhat lost a lot of loyal readers due to that one month hiatus and the current format being installed. I think months ago this post would have sparked at least 20+ comments. Readership appears to be WAY down.

Sep 09, 2017 08:29 AMDoesn't this have to be approved by the city? Or can they bypass the city because a school is a CA state agency?

Sep 09, 2017 09:05 AMAnd Santa Barbara likes to call itself the birthplace of the environmental movement! With all they are spending on this project (reportedly $39 million...and that's before the inevitable cost over runs) you'd think they could have come up with a way to save at least the mature trees. This is truly shocking to me.

Sep 09, 2017 04:08 PMI've said it before - any developer or utility can and DOES get permission to remove trees. Any private citizen does not.
-------------------------------------------------------- Add this to the monetary COST of this stadium project... I realize sports is ingrained in culture and can't be removed, even from schools. A friend pointed out to me that students do get sports scholarships for college. But I still don't like it.

Sep 12, 2017 11:17 AMHere's what I have found out so far: Call that SBHS # 963-4338 and key in EXT . 6238. That will connect you with Dave Hetyonk. Apparently he's the man who has the scoop on this project. I just called him, got his message machine and am awaiting a call back. I hope more people call in to protest this tree removal.
