An accident on Harris Grade Road in Lompoc prompted an emergency response, with fire crews rushing to the spot shortly after the incident was reported.

A traffic accident was reported on May 6, 2026, on Harris Grade Road, north of Rucker Road, in the Lompoc area at around 5:32 p.m., the Santa Barbara County Fire Department announced in a social media post.

Fire crews from the Santa Barbara County Fire and Lompoc City Fire departments rushed to the spot shortly and began working in the area.

No further details about the incident were immediately available, the Santa Barbara County Fire Department said.

Authorities did not disclose information on how the crash happened, how many people were affected, or how many vehicles were involved.

Additionally, the fire crews did not share details on how the fire started or how long it took to control the blaze.

The Santa Barbara County Fire Department, however, said more updates will be provided as information becomes available.

The fire department shared a map of the location where first responders were actively working on the scene.

Authorities encouraged motorists to avoid the scene of the accident to reduce traffic and enable emergency responders to operate safely. Drivers were reminded to drive with caution in the area.

The Santa Barbara County Fire Department also thanked first responders for their prompt action at the crash site.

The latest accident adds to a long history of serious collisions along Harris Grade Road.

History of Collisions on Harris Grade Road

Spanning nearly eight miles, Harris Grade Road connects the Lompoc and Los Alamos valleys in Santa Barbara County.

Though a scenic drive, the road is treacherously steep and winding, resulting in several crashes over the years.

The rise in collisions and the notorious curves on the road led the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors to ban semitrailers over 30 feet in length from Harris Grade Road in 2010, according to a Santa Maria Times report.

The news report attributed the surge in traffic and resulting accidents to GPS, which guided drivers to the road due to its shorter travel time compared to taking Highway 135 to Highway 1 past Vandenberg Air Force Base.

In November 2024, a vehicle collision near the Vandenberg Village area of Lompoc on Harris Grade Road resulted in the deaths of two young girls. Similar to the accident on May 6, the fatal crash in 2024 occurred at the intersection of Harris Grade and Rucker Roads.

According to authorities, Hernandez Cervantes was driving under the influence and speeding when California Highway Patrol officers tried to stop his car. However, he sped away during the pursuit, lost control while maneuvering a curve, and crashed into a tree, tearing the vehicle in half.

Passengers in Cervantes’ car, a seven-month-old infant and a three-year-old girl, were killed in the accident.

As emergency responders continue to investigate the latest crash, the history of serious crashes on Harris Grade Road serves as a reminder for drivers to slow down and exercise caution while taking this route.
