A TJ's is definitely going to be established in Carpinteria. Should be built out before mid-2023. The local population cap for establishing a unit in a given city is not a factor. Income, and dare I say, EDUCATION level are factors. The people who live in Ojai and the surrounding area often shop or commute through Carp, so there's another potential 20K financially capable folks to stalk the aisles of TJ's. I'm more of a Mom-n-Pop shopper; TJ's has it's good points, but parking is often quite cramped, and many of the customers tend to be "label readers" blocking the aisles while they make sure there's no gluten in the cat food.
It was only wishful thinking. Any store that had good milk , bread, eggs, vegetables everyday products would be nice, then having to drive 5 miles.
Hey Summerland used to support a grocery store for a long time.
I grew up in Pasadena, shopped at the original store, and I remember that after an election they gave people a candy bar if they brought in their "I have voted" sticker. Lovely that a business rewarded people doing their civic duty!
The population requirement of 50K is not accurate; we have had a thriving TJ’s in Arroyo Grande for nearly 20 years and our population is only 18K.
A Carp TJ’s would be a welcome addition.
I live in Moorpark and work in Carp. We heard the same hopeful rumor about our cit a couple of years ago but found that TJ only goes to cities where the population is at least 50,000 to insure a suscessful store. Carpinteria, sadly, is far from that and deliberately small on purpose. But it means it will miss the larger chains and retailers some of us might enjoy having around. So, I doubt very much this will happen, sorry Carp!
TJ has sort of outlived its purpose/utility. Back when the only store was in Pasadena it provided a refreshing attitude. Cheap wine, quality cheese, decent imports. For the past several years it has lived off of aging Boomers and a Vegans. When they started packaging their produce in plastic I cooled my ardor and really haven't shopped there on a regular basis since.
I discovered TJ's during the big grocery store strike a couple of decades ago. It's great! They have actually very much reduced the packaging in their produce, and have pledged to do more.
I find the prices for a lot of my staples (rice, marinara, cheese, canned beans) to be far better than what I can get at the other local grocery stores. (Not an aging boomer, nor am a vegan!)
This rumor, and it is only that, has been kicked around for years and has never turned out to be factual. It's only wishful thinking by some residents. Smart 'N Final and CVS are going nowhere.
Just like Costco and other groceries, Tj's doesn't make their own name-brand food. They just pay to have someone else's product put into their packaging. That's why some recalls span multiple brands and stores, it's all the same food. Sorry you got sick but I'm more sorry you've avoided TJs unnecessarily for so long!!
A Trader Joe’s anywhere is a good thing.
I hope this is true.
I wish it would be in Summerland.
Parking why would you question parking?
I’m sure if it’s happening they have it all worked out. Now let’s hope for a Trader Joe’s .

For anyone that didn't listen, according to the podcast, Trader Joes is looking at the land at Eye of the Day design center to build a new structure. Take it for what it's worth.
Seems VERY unlikely given there's no current retail space close to what TJ's would need, and no space with parking. Perhaps if Smart and Final or CVS closed shop they could move into that space, otherwise there's nothing else that works. Carp also seems unlikely because it's half-way between SB and Ventura stores, and Ojai residents shop Ventura regardless.

Apr 29, 2022 12:27 PMSanta Barbara has two. Goleta one. I doubt Carpenteria could support one.
Much bigger cities with lots of vacant land and old grocery stores shut down
do not get a TJ with another TJ 15 miles away.
They have to earn a million bucks a month. plus TJs are labor heavy.
Aldi would be a better guess if in LA County. Less staff. Two checkers.
But if a lease is due, maybe rents are cheaper in Carpenteria. Doubtful.
Or maybe Smart n Final is pulling out.....

Apr 29, 2022 07:48 AMUsed to love TJs until I was sickened by the taquito recall around maybe 2003 or 2004? Never again shopped there. Too unsafe
