  1. That said, personal recollections (or lack thereof) do have an impact on perceptions. I recently listened to an NPR segment about how some people point to occurrences of very cold weather as proof that “Global Warming” can’t be happening. The truth is they’ve just become accustomed to warm winters and perceive moderately cold weather as extreme. Even the recent “polar vortex” doesn’t approach the extreme cold snaps of 1936, 1970, 1977, 1983, 1989, and 1996 ……… https://www.nationalgeographic.com/environment/2019/02/this-polar-vortex-should-have-been-colder/

  2. 11:33 am is correct. The early 1990s saw much more extreme rainfall in SB than what we this week. Weather in California is cyclical. In the late 1970s there was severe drought in Northen California which saw Shasta Lake drop 230’ feet, just above the intakes for the hydro plant. It was Armageddon, and with the polar vortex winters on the east coast all the “climate change” talk was about the new coming “Ice Age”. The drought broke with an unprecedented 40’ snowpack on Mount Shasta which was shortly followed by a Pineapple Express storm which melted most of it which threatened to overtop Shasta Dam. For many today, the storms this week are the worst in their lifetimes, however it’s nothing new. Just look at all the boulders in Rocky Nook Park. They were deposited there by some ancient debris flow just like the one that terrorized us last year. I’m not a Facebook person, but crack open a history book every now and then to get some perspective.

  3. Here’s a compilation of articles of the 1970s speculation-scare-hysteria about global cooling/coming ice age. All the major media players participated such as the NYT, LAT, WP, Time Mag, Newsweek mag, and etc. There was no avoiding it at the time. I was in elementary school at the time, but I remember the magazine articles at TV segments dedicated to the topic. Don’t be bullied about the source. This is what happened then.

  4. Well. I guess you couldn’t be bothered with reading the article, so I’ll extract the pertinent parts for you: “By 1980 the predictions about ice ages had ceased, due to the overwhelming evidence contained in an increasing number of reports that warned of global warming. Unfortunately, the small number of predictions of an ice age appeared to be much more interesting than those of global warming, so it was those sensational ‘Ice Age’ stories in the press that so many people tend to remember.”

[10% predicted cooling, 28% no stance, 62% predicted warming]
“The fact is that around 1970 there were 6 times as many scientists predicting a warming rather than a cooling planet. Today, with 30+years more data to analyse, we’ve reached a clear scientific consensus: 97% of working climate scientists agree with the view that human beings are causing global warming.”

And for those unfamiliar with wattsupwiththat denial:
“Watts Up With That? (or WUWT) is a blog promoting climate change denial that was created by Anthony Watts in 2006. The blog predominantly discusses climate issues with a focus on anthropogenic climate change, generally accommodating beliefs that are in opposition to the scientific consensus on climate change.”

  5. And, for those unfamiliar with denialist Anthony Watts:
    Credentials
Anthony Watts studied Electrical Engineering and Meteorology at Purdue University, but according to correspondence between Purdue University and SourceWatch, he did not graduate.
    Background
Anthony Watts is a former television meteorologist best known as the founder and editor of the blog Watts Up With That (WUWT), which primarily publishes articles critical of mainstream climate change science. ”
