Tick alert for Skofield Park and Rattlesnake Canyon! My dogs were covered in small ticks after a day up here. I used a comb afterward to try and get them all off, but they are so small.

Local ticks can carry lyme disease. If you are bit by a tick you need to watch for the red rash and get to your doctor for anti-biotics. Lyme disease is not easily cured once it advances.

They are being brought to the Wilcox (DFP)! Please check your dogs after trails and nature outings to stop the spread of them. Due to an injury, we have not been on the trails for a few months and have only make it to the Wilcox and Hendrys. Have found two on my dog this last week and in 25 years we have never gotten one there .

ticks certainly do come out more after the earliest winter rainfall...hey, please DO NOT use insecticides vs. ticks on your dogs. The wonderful dogs of course go into the creek, and lots of Rattlesnake Cyn Creek is flowing right now, and then this affect the water quality! Just pick them off, or use the comb at home, no big deal.

I've also noticed that there are more ticks - lots more ticks - after rains.

Anyone spraying their dogs with insecticides doesn't deserve to have a dog.

Much as I loathe insecticides it is a good idea to spray down your animals in this season. There are lots of "natural" animal sprays that will repel ticks and it is a lot easier to have them not land at all than to remove them later.

And here's where I come in: most fly repellents used on horses also repel ticks (and many many other bugs as well) AND are marked as safe to use on dogs. Jedlickas has a good selection of this stuff. Just read the label on the back to double check for ticks and dogs and you're good to go!

I seem to recall from my trail ridings days that ticks are numerous after rains.
