Construction on the widening of Highway 46 East continues in the Cholame area with a planned three-day, daytime full closure of State Route 41 from the interchange with Highway 46 East to State Route 33 beginning Tuesday, August 26 through Thursday, August 28 from 6 am until 8 pm.

  • Travelers headed east on Hwy. 46 will continue to State Route 33 before reaching State Route 41 at Reef Station.
  • Travelers headed south on State Route 41 will detour onto State Route 33 at Reef Station to Hwy. 46 East.

Delays are not expected to exceed 45 minutes. This roadwork is necessary to allow the new Highway 46 East/State Route 41 Interchange to be connected to State Route 41.

The full widening project is expected to be complete in Spring of 2026.  All businesses near the Highway 46 East corridor remain open. The contractor for this $147 million project which extends from west of Davis Road to west of Antelope Road is Atkinson Construction of Irvine, CA.

This widening follows five completed phases from Paso Robles leading to the Hwy. 46/41 Interchange. The $124 million widening of Highway 46 East from near the Shandon Rest Area to east of the Jack Ranch Café was completed in 2025. The $47 million widening of Highway 46 East from McMillan Canyon Road to Lucy Brown

Road was completed in 2019. The $38 million widening from Almond Drive to McMillan Canyon Road was completed in 2016. The $54 million widening from Geneseo Road to east of Almond Drive was completed in 2014 while the $30 million widening from Airport Road to Geneseo Road wrapped up in 2010.

All highway workers deserve to get home safely too. Drive slowly and carefully in all work zones.
