Three California cities, Santa Rosa, Irvine, and Chula Vista, have ranked among the nation’s 25 safest cities, according to WalletHub’s 2025 report analyzing safety, financial stability, and natural disaster risks across more than 180 U.S. communities.
The California cities made the list after WalletHub analyzed 41 key indicators of safety, including violent crime, natural disaster risk, traffic fatalities, unemployment, and financial stability.
“The safest cities in America protect residents from these threats of bodily harm and property damage, but on top of that, they also help secure people’s financial safety,” Chip Lupo, WalletHub analyst, said.
WalletHub Study Metrics
WalletHub summarized the findings of the study using three metrics: natural disaster risk, home and community safety, and financial safety.
California cities performed particularly well in the Home & Community Safety category.
While the top five overall safest cities were Warwick (Rhode Island), Overland Park (Kansas), Burlington (Vermont), Juneau (Alaska), and Yonkers (New York), California’s Santa Rosa, Irvine, and Chula Vista ranked 32nd, 6th, and 21st, respectively, in that subcategory.
Santa Rosa recorded the fewest traffic fatalities per capita among all 182 cities studied. The city attributes its strong performance to community outreach, traffic enforcement, and its Vision Zero Action Plan, which aims to eliminate traffic fatalities and severe injuries by 2030.
Irvine recorded the fewest assaults per capita in the country, reinforcing its long-standing reputation as one of the safest urban communities in America.
In terms of exposure to natural disasters, Santa Rosa ranked at 20th, followed by Chula Vista at 39th and Irvine at 127th.
Moreover, California is also known as one of the states with the strongest gun laws in the U.S.
“ Year after year, California’s gun safety laws are ranked as the strongest in the nation, contributing to a rate of gun deaths far lower than the national average,” Governor Gavin Newsom had said in a post on X on 4 June 2025.
