Thousands of demonstrators lined Cabrillo Boulevard on Saturday to join the nationwide “No Kings” protest, aimed at opposing the Trump administration and defending democracy.
Stretching from Milpas Street to Castillo Street, protesters waved upside-down American flags—a symbol of national distress—and displayed signs carrying messages such as “No Kings, No Idiots,” “Immigrants Make America Great,” and “If Kamala won, we’d be at brunch right now.”
For nearly three hours, attendees chanted in unison and received honks of support from passing vehicles along Santa Barbara’s waterfront. It’s unclear how many protestors were in attendance but event organizer Indivisible Santa Barbara organizers estimated the crowd could be 12,000 to 20,000 attendees. This would make it one of the most attended protests in Santa Barbara history.
Santa Barbara’s turnout was just one example of the historic nationwide mobilization. The “No Kings” protest brought millions to the streets in over 2,100 cities and towns across the country. Organizers stated this movement has exceeded expectations, uniting citizens to reject authoritarian overreach, defend fundamental freedoms, and protect vulnerable communities.

“Reports from major cities like Philadelphia, Chicago, Atlanta, Charlotte, and Los Angeles highlight massive, peaceful crowds energized by a shared commitment to resisting federal policies that threaten civil rights, healthcare, and protections for immigrant communities,” organizers from the “No Kings” coalition stated.
With hundreds of events still underway, Saturday’s No Kings actions have already drawn more than 5 million participants—nearly 2 million more than the Hands Off protests on April 5. Organizers and local law enforcement reported over 200,000 in New York, over 100,000 in Philadelphia, and in some towns like Pentwater, Michigan saw 400 people join in their small town with a population of 800.
The protest specifically responds to recent actions by the Trump administration, including the deployment of military force in U.S. cities, proposals to strip healthcare from 16 million Americans, and escalating ICE raids targeting immigrant communities and protesters.
While the movement is committed to nonviolence, many participants are mourning the victims of an act of political violence in Minnesota. State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark were fatally shot, while State Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette are recovering after surgery.
In response to the tragedy, organizers canceled all remaining protests in Minnesota out of caution. “We condemn all acts of violence and call on communities to stand united in rejecting hatred and defending freedom,” the coalition emphasized.

The “No Kings” movement is led by a coalition of more than 100 organizations, including Indivisible, ACLU, Public Citizen, MoveOn, Human Rights Campaign, and League of Conservation Voters. Local organizers across the country are focusing on ensuring peaceful demonstrations by undergoing de-escalation training and collaborating with community partners.
Coinciding with the mass mobilization is Trump’s controversial $45 million military parade on his 79th birthday. Critics have slammed the parade as a taxpayer-funded display of self-indulgence, particularly while essential public programs, such as Social Security, Medicaid, and public schools, continue to face budgetary cuts. Organizers describe the No Kings protests as a direct counter to the billion-dollar-first policies that have dominated Trump’s administration.
The parade is also expected to commemorate the U.S. Army’s 250th anniversary and will include about 6,600 soldiers, as well as about 150 vehicles and over 50 aircraft.
In Santa Barbara and cities nationwide, the grassroots effort symbolizes a growing commitment to safeguard democracy and uphold the values of justice, peace, and equality. Millions have already joined, marking the “No Kings” protest as one of the largest demonstrations in modern history.

Who cares about the numbers. It was about the size of Solstice. Trump had his measly, pathetic parade that nobody came to see. I really enjoyed reading the songs and feeling the positive vibes. This one “man” has never felt love and fills that void with ego and counting his money. He is taking this country down that will take years to recover from.
Crying over spilled milk. Let me quote my horrible brother, “Take your medicine, say you’re sorry, and don’t ever let it happen again.”
That’s not how America works. You don’t just shrug and give up while a rapist criminal craps all over the Constitution and carries out a racist agenda.
This is exactly how America work!! This mess boils down to the Democrats failure to put up a candidate that could win an election. First looser in the primaries is usually not a good choice. So I guess in a round about way, you voted for Trump!!
Looser is an adjective, meaning less tight, not a noun. so, in addition to faulty thinking, you’ve managed faulty expression.
Twit alert!
And SAIL – you must be from a different America if you think keeping silent and doing nothing while a wannabe tyrant guts the constitutional rights of millions of people based on their race is “exactly how America work.”
What happened to all you Cons being all about the rule of law and the Constitution and all that jazz? Mouths too full of boot leather to talk?
SAIL – lol no, in no way, shape or form did Democrats “vote for Trump” because the party failed to put up a better candidate.
I hope you stretch before you do mental gymnastics like that. This one was a doozy!
“Over 1,000?” Somebody can’t count. There must have been 6,000+ protestors gathered, off and on. The line stretched from Milpas St to SBCC.
6,000???? Did you count them all? Geez. At least 2,000 but how in the heck did you land on 6000?
Someone on Facebook just said there were 14,000. Hahah.. how do we accurately determine the crowd size or do we just pull a trump and lie. There were one million people in Santa Barbara protesting!
I heard there was about 25,000 bots around the First palm tree
You seem incapable of saying anything even marginally intelligent (or grammatical).
Giz is a weird one, for sure.
What does that mean?
If people sat hip to hip or stood shoulder to shoulder in a single line from Milpas to Castillo, that would be 5,280 people. There was more than a single line.
What an odd thing to emphasize. I read “thousands.” There’s no lie there. I’ve never been able to visually assess numbers.
Whatever the number, it’s a great turnout, here in SB and nationwide!
Initial reporting was over one thousand but as the protest grew I believe it’s now estimated to be around 10,000’ish.. maybe. Edhat updated their story.
Update: Indivisible Santa Barbara, one of the event organizers, estimated the crowd size was closer to 20,000 people.
Santa Barbarans.
Give up that old, overused canard!
As one of the protest signs said, ‘I don’t need to be paid, I hate him for free!’
YIN – it’s sad that these MAGots truly can’t accept that good Americans don’t need to be paid to stand up against tyranny, cruelty and lawlessness.
Funniest thing about it, is that they were actually paying seat fillers at Trumps birfday pawade. $1000 a person.
They just can’t conceive that people don’t like them so much that they would take their Saturday, all 12 MILLION of us, to come out and say as loud as we could, F9%K TRUMP!
It was glorious!
Milpas to Castillo is approximately 8,000 feet…say each person takes up 1.5 feet shoulder-to-shoulder that’d be 5,333 people. By the looks of it, people were 2 to 4 deep, so let’s average that out to 3 people deep. Now we’re looking at almost 16,000 people, but probably more like 20,000 were there. A great showing SB!
Where are all the pictures from? what an interesting crew
Once again, a question indicating that the article wasn’t read.
Or more likely, wasn’t understood.
Wasn’t understood , no matter who tried to analyze it, except for the people that were holding the pre-done signs.
That makes no sense, but it’s typical of your comments.
THE NOT SMART ANON – Yes, ALL signs ever used in any protest every anywhere always are “pre-done.” Kind of hard to be holding a sign that is being drawn as you walk and hold it.
But, I think you mean mass produced or something? Yeah, didn’t see a single mass produced sign at this protest. You know where to find those?
Yeah, so I get that you unoriginal, uncreative, untalented sloths don’t understand creative ability, but it’s just you guys who BUY your signs from CHINA.
Gads, I love this!
You must be an engineer and calculate everything. How did you calculate the last administrations crookery, lies, auto pen and Kamala who(the border czar)
That calculation is easy: 0
Brain cells
Yes, you seem really deficient in those.
Please stop commenting when inebriated.
Hey ANON name ONE lie or corrupt act from the prior administration that was more blatant and illegal than Trump just waking up (if that fat Adderall fueled hunk o’ pudding even sleeps) in the morning.
NOTHING Biden might have done compares to the daily barrage of lies, hate and pure, unadulterated IDIOCY that drips from the Felon’s chemically enhanced lips.
Go ahead and try though….
Wow you sure got nasty quick Biden was braindead and everybody covered it up, runaway train. Economy tanked. Why have a border with Biden. Foreign policy was null just like everything else.
^ typical stupid ignorant nonsense from right wingers
Economy tanked???
You’re obviously incapable of paying attention to much of anything.
FYI: The economy did not tank under Biden. Inflation was a global phenomenon (that Trump somehow failed to fix on “day one”…despite a promise to do so. The economy overall was the strongest in the world. And the war in the Middle East is only expanding…despite Trump’s promise to “end it on day one.” Same with Ukraine (that one was supposed to end before day one!) We’re all still waiting for “day one.” He’s certainly done a lot of damage since that day.
I can easily respond to your tired comment about Biden being “braindead”, though. “Is that all you got?” Really? All you can say “yeah, but the other guy was worse”? Sad.
Economy tanked? Please post any stock chart or fiscal numbers. Ya, you’re an idiot. Stfu
Awesome number of fun signs out there – so creative. My favorite was the one with “these are the only Kings I trust to run our country”…MLK, Stephen King, Carol King, etc. Looks like everyone had a great time.
Thanks — I did not immediately identify Carole (blush)
BASIC – were you there? It was awesome!
I was really surprised how many people showed up. It was great to be part of something so positive and American!
Of course he wasn’t.
Did any of these people stop to think that IF Trump was a King/Dictator/Tyrant/(Fill In The Blank) he wouldn’t allow these protests?
This was nothing more than a bunch of clowns virtue signaling other clowns.
Odds are the edhat censors won’t post this- so much for free speech!
ZIPS – stop your crying. You comment is still here, sounding just as stupid as the almost identical comment sounds on Facebook.
Zippy – Like he allowed the protest in LA? The clowns are the ones who believe that peoples’ voices can be silenced, like Trump in LA. By the way, I fully support your right to say even the most ridiculous things. I find it amusing. Yes, it’s called free speech.
Here’s some guidance from artificial intelligence, since your own is so impoverished:
Authoritarian crackdowns, and the broader process of democratic backsliding or authoritarian consolidation, often occur in a staged manner.
A Slow and Gradual Process:
Authoritarianism often emerges gradually, with small changes and battles weakening democratic foundations over time.
This can culminate in a period of rapid democratic losses and decline.
Key Stages or Tactics:
Several sources outline tactics or stages commonly observed in authoritarian crackdowns:
Undermining Institutions:
Targeting and capturing independent institutions (e.g., judiciary, media, universities).
Weakening or removing checks and balances.
Suppressing Dissent:
Restricting civil liberties (e.g., freedom of speech, assembly).
Suppressing opposition, sometimes through targeting opponents.
Controlling media narratives and spreading disinformation.
Normalizing the use of force and militarized police.
Manipulating Elections:
Subverting the electoral process through legal manipulation or outright fraud.
Suppressing votes and biasing election results.
Stoking Fear and Division:
Creating fear and scapegoating vulnerable populations.
Inciting or condoning violence to achieve political goals.
Why Stages are Employed:
Normalization: Gradual encroachment can make extreme actions seem more acceptable.
Minimizing Resistance: Small steps may not trigger widespread concern initially.
Exploiting Crises: “States of emergency” or national security concerns can be used to justify
power grabs.
The people counting remind me of their president counting his first inauguration- both wildly wrong, but desperate to believe.
Wait until you hear Trump’s count of that pathetic turnout for his parade!
Those of us who live in reality understand it was not Trump’s parade. It was celebrating the U.S. Army’s 250th birthday, and Trump is commander in chief of our armed forces.
Too bad somebody didn’t tell Trump that; he’s still calling it “his” parade. And he couldn’t care less about the Army’s 250th birthday – he was just glad that is coincided with HIS birthday. That was not a parade to celebrate our great Army. If it was, the soldiers would have been marching in lockstep, not walking lazily down the street.
Nothing like a parade of “Losers and Suckers” to get the old nationalist half mast up.
ZIPS – The Army has had 250 birthdays, but never a military parade. Why?
You wouldn’t know reality if it sat on your pointy little head.
Crickets of course. Right wingers are such dishonest slime.
Another favorite, among dozens and dozens of great signs:
The only good orange monarch
is a butterfly
I found the line of protesters dressed in black with “signs of fascism” to be very powerful.
Rest in peace and power, Melissa and Mark Hortman.
(The murderer has done many things in his life. There is no love like … blind, self-regarding hate)
200,000 watched the parade and millions on TV. It was historically very interesting. No show of teeth at all and everyone seemed relaxed and happy.
A nice honoring of the army.
And a nice opportunity for Trump to take a nap.
“Millions” (doubt that) sat on their couches and watched him waste 45 million of our hard earned dollars and plenty more of his unethical donors’ $$ on a basically empty street with some squeaky tanks as he fell asleep, while MILLIONS MORE took to the streets to proudly and peacefully tell him he sucks.
It was pathetic and did the Army no service. They deserved better.
Such lies. 200,000 is the number that the Trump fascist regime said they *expected* to attend; a much smaller number actually did. And news reports say that “a large number of people” made an early exit, with its journalists capturing on video a “logjam” as spectators attempted to leave the secured area. And there are no figures on how many watched this dreary boring parade on TV.
OTOH, upwards of 4 million people attended No Kings rallies.
Regarding one of the signs: What in the world does Randy Rowse have to do with a “No Kings” protest? He’s a small-town mayor in a city with a “weak mayor” form of government. He is one vote out of seven when it comes to making any decisions, and often the only vote for his position. Whether you agree with him or not, to refer to him as “Trumpism in coastal camouflage” is beyond absurd.
So what? Out of a very large number of diverse people with many many signs, you cherry pick one silly one. Go hunt that person down and explain to them your objection to their sign.
So only people who are commenting on certain signs are allowed? Sorry, I didn’t know.
I “cherry picked” that particular sign because it was silly and had nothing to do with the protest. If I’d seen it down there I would have asked them what their sign meant, exactly, but it was a long line. I missed that one.
“So only people who are commenting on certain signs are allowed? Sorry, I didn’t know.”
Did I say that? No. Sorry that you are so dishonest.
I’m always amused by the hypocrisy of people who make a critical comment reacting to critical response as if it amounted to gagging them or dragging them off in handcuffs. My comment of course did not do that. “So I can’t post here?” — Um, you just did, and your “Sorry, I didn’t know” snark is stupid and immature.
The fact remains that no one here is defending the silly sign, which in the context of this event is utterly irrelevant. Out of all the possibilities, THAT is what you choose to comment on? Like I said: so what?
You know, we are on exactly the same page politically. I didn’t think that sign belonged in a Trump protest, you didn’t think I should comment on it. Let’s leave it at that.
We don’t need your dishonest recap.
They all look like misfits.
HATSOFF – These are the VAST majority of your community here. Sounds like you’re the misfit.
Like I said, misfits.
Just people with nothing better to do, like you and your never ending putdowns.
HATS – standing up against racism, cruelty, and unlawful acts of a criminal president and all the other stuff you support is hardly “nothing better to do.” It’s what real Americans do.
And putdowns? Bro, you LITERALLY called them misfits twice in 20 minutes.
Sounds like we triggered you. Good. I’m glad. You are the what over 11 MILLION Americans took to the streets to oppose yesterday.
I counted 87 other American flags in these pictures … no doubt I missed quite a few.
Giz ain ‘t no whiz.
I realize, Anonymous, that you know and understand nothing at all and don’t care about whether you’re right or wrong, just that you’re owning the libs (which you are utterly incapable of), but the convertible’s flag is upside down, which means that the nation is in distress, which means that they certainly aren’t supporting Trump. This is the same inverted flag that GOP operative Sam Alito’s wife flew at their home during the Biden administration in a gross violation of judicial ethics.
I’m pretty sure you weren’t there. While I found it interesting that a lot of the media showed Mexican flags, and other flags – roughly 80-90% of the flags carried there (my guesstimate, because I was there for 2 hours) – were American Flags – with about 30% hung upside down. (A sign of distress.)
Any and all folks who are so distressed by the state of the US need to take a step back and look at things a bit differently. All hope is not lost. There are plenty of ways to de-stress without resorting to violence, drugs, alcohol….or worse. Help is available to everyone, so please/please do whatever it takes to get life on track again. If hanging a flag upside-down does it for you, the go for it. One of the ways that we find helpful is foreign travel to make one appreciate what we have here, regardless of who is in political power. Our bodies are not built to be under duress for months and years at a time.
BEES – No one, and I mean NO ONE, resorted to violence this weekend except losers on your side.
😉 I get it. Bees. Cute! The best satire is usually not appreciated.
ANON – no you don’t. That wasn’t satire. It was just another BEES comment about accepting the status quo.
Obviously. Sac, you’re too literal — I was just trolling his use of such “liberal” psychological terminology. He is trying to sound philosophical with his “Relax. Take it easy” approach. Instead, it only sound preachy and ignorant about what is happening.
Oh cool, BEES. You figured out how to comment anonymously. Good job!
Different Anon here – Sacjon, why would Bees call himself preachy and ignorant? You seem to be challenging someone who agrees with you. Just sayin’.
LOL maybe, but you never know with ol BEES…..
Anon: Some goof thinks you is me.
I still do.
Misfit is just one of eight personality types. What happened to writing letters to potus? Whenever I see the f word proudly displayed, I figure low IQ.
Writing letters to this president? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Are you kidding? The guy needs his daily SECURITY briefings put into reality show style format, BECAUSE HE DOESN’T READ.
Yeah, Orange Babycakes is going to read letters…. LOL
The A-Hole murderer in Minnesota think just like a couple folks on this board. From just a few days ago:
Alexblue: “Yeah, I don’t know, at some point a free citizenry might have to start exercising their 2nd amendment rights to overturn a government which is violating the constitution.”
Sacjon: “ALEX is right. This is what the 2A was meant for. Might be time for real Americans to stand up to this!”
BEES – so you’re calling ALEX and I potential murderers because we’re pointing out the blatant hypocrisy of those Gravy Seals (like the domestic terrorist who assassinated the representative) who tout the 2nd Amendment as an inalienable right to defend our nation from a tyrannical government, which is EXACTLY why the founding fathers wrote it?
That’s stupid and reckless. You need to really think about what you’re saying BEES/ANON.
“Might be time for real Americans to stand up to this!”
Yup, and that’s what MILLIONS of us did on Saturday.
But yeah, I’ll say it again – when a government oppresses it’s people and takes away their freedoms and their rights, then it is 100% time for revolution.
Are you that inundated with leather that you would oppose that?
Again, comparing those warning of doing EXACTLY what our founding fathers intended is not the same as actually killing lawmakers.
Comparing us to a domestic terrorist is disgusting and shows a fundamental lack of critical thinking and intelligence.
You’re dumb, bro.
You’re a hoot! I’d totally love to have you over to one of my house parties. My sanctuary is “safe space” where all people and ideas are welcome. You can wear an “F” Trump t-shirt, MAGA hat, wave an upside-down US flag, cross-dress, whatever you want. You’d most likely would have a great time and leave a changed person. No RSVP required….Regrets only.
Why would I wear a MAGA hat? You’re a weird gal/guy BEES.
I’ll respectfully decline, I don’t hang with fascist sympathizers.
A whole house full of arrogant, ignorant, dishonest jackasses? Not very appealing.
If by “house parties” you mean your normal celebration during which you and your four cats parade around your house to disco music and feed each other morsels, I don’t think anyone wants to join in on that one.
“Congressman Jamie Raskin (MD-08) today, on the 28th anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing, which killed 168 people, released the following statement on efforts by many in the Republican Party to misinterpret the Second Amendment in order to defend violent and insurrectionary attacks on the government and law enforcement.
“From the floor of the House of Representatives to Truth Social, my GOP colleagues routinely assert that the Second Amendment is about ‘the ability to maintain an armed rebellion against the government if that becomes necessary,’ that it was ‘designed purposefully to empower the people to be able to resist the force of tyranny used against them,’ and that it ‘has nothing to do with hunting, unless you’re talking about hunting tyrants, maybe.’
“Before he murdered 168 people, including 19 children, Timothy McVeigh became obsessed with guns and pondered whether ‘we have to shed blood to reform the current system?’
“But the pervasive, dangerous claim that a self-appointed minority of the people have a right to use deadly force against elected representatives or the police betrays the actual Constitution and twists the Second Amendment into a pretzel of logical absurdity which blocks our ability to respond to the nightmare of gun violence in our society.
“Indeed, in a half-dozen different places, the Constitution treats ‘insurrection’ and ‘rebellion’ not as protected rights but as serious crimes against our government and people.
“Plainly, Article I, Section 8, Clause 15 gives Congress the power to ‘provide for calling forth the Militia to execute the Laws of the Union, suppress Insurrections and repel Invasions.’ The Republican Guarantee Clause in Article IV, Section 4 further provides that the United States shall guarantee a republican form of government to the people and protect each state’s government and people ‘against Invasion and … domestic violence.’ (Emphasis added.)
“Section 3 of the Fourteenth Amendment actually disqualifies from future officeholding anyone who swears an oath to the Constitution and then engages in ‘insurrection or rebellion.’
“When I have pointed out the Constitution’s comprehensive rejection of insurrectionary violence, my GOP colleagues proudly invoke Patrick Henry of “give me liberty or give me death” fame. This is amusing because Patrick Henry was, of course, an anti-Federalist who voted against the Constitution. His slogans tell us nothing about its meaning.
“Make no mistake: the real Constitution rejects the right-wing fantasy that random bands of disgruntled armed citizens can claim the powers of the constitutional ‘Militia’ to commit violent acts against public officials.
“The phony insurrectionary theory allows right-wing politicians to suggest that the mass destructive violence of January 6 was something other than criminal. But it was entirely criminal, and it opposed the Constitution in both letter and spirit.
“The fanciful claim that the Second Amendment exists to allow armed groups to overthrow the government is the basis for the equally deranged claim that the people must have an arsenal equal to the government’s. But nothing in the Constitution guarantees any person a right to a military-style assault weapon, a tank or any other military-style weaponry.
“It is plain to see where former President Trump wants to take his movement now. But the rest of America must make it plain to Trump’s followers in Congress and all the extremist and insurrectionist groups how our Constitution works. They have no lawful right to overthrow our government or attack our police. That does not exist in the Second Amendment or anywhere else in our Constitution. We are governed by law.”

This was powerful. More power than the clown in the White House will ever see. My daughter, my dog Karma, and myself attended from beginning to end. It was moving. It was surreal. It was intense. From, past Plaza Del Mar park, past Calle Cesar Chavez, and swelling past the bike path on the beach, spilling into the sand. Rows and rows of people exercising their rites. “Were the No Kings protests the largest single-day demonstration in American history?
Depending on who you ask, between 4 and 6 million people showed up – and according to one theory, this could be a turning point
The scale of last weekend’s “No Kings” protests is now becoming clearer, with one estimate suggesting that Saturday was among the biggest ever single-day protests in US history.
Working out exactly where the protest ranks compared with similar recent events has been a project of G Elliott Morris, a data journalist who runs the Substack Strength in Numbers, calculated turnout between 4 million and 6 million, which would be 1.2-1.8% of the US population. This could exceed the previous record in recent history, when between 3.3 million and 5.6 million people showed up at the 2017 Women’s March to rally against Trump’s misogynistic rhetoric.”

Typical lack of MAGAts critical thinking.
Here’s the clown: https://images.app.goo.gl/rzCvoxie3JT1ANCe6

Tell us the right number.
Crickets of course. Right wingers are such dishonest slime.
Another favorite, among dozens and dozens of great signs:
The only good orange monarch

LOL
Dunning-Kruger effect.

If by “house parties” you mean your normal celebration during which you and your four cats parade around your house to disco music and feed each other morsels, I don’t think anyone wants to join in on that one.
https://raskin.house.gov/2023/4/raskin-insurrectionary-theory-of-second-amendment-betrays-the-actual-constitution
Thanks for posting this.
