California is often associated with large, fast-paced cities, but the state is also home to some of the most peaceful communities in the country. A recent ranking of the 30 most peaceful places to live in California lists several Central Coast locations, including three cities in San Luis Obispo County and two in Ventura County.

The list, published by Money Inc., evaluated cities based on factors such as crime rates, community engagement, access to nature, and overall pace of life. These factors suggest that peaceful living in California extends well beyond its crowded cities and traffic-heavy reputation. Many of these communities balance tranquility with accessibility while prioritizing quality of life.

San Luis Obispo County

Cambria

Cambria, known for its quiet, small-town character, made it to the Money Inc.’s list. Located along Highway 1, the coastal community is surrounded by natural scenery, including one of only three remaining native Monterey pine forests in coastal California, according to the Cambria Community Services District.

Cambria’s average home listing price is around $1 million, reflecting its secluded coastal location. Data cited by Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices shows the majority of homes are owner-occupied, with a relatively small renter population, indicating long-term residential stability.

San Luis Obispo

The city of San Luis Obispo offers a more active but still balanced form of peaceful living. Its downtown features shops, restaurants, and regular community events such as the weekly farmers market and seasonal dining promotions. Despite this activity, the city generally avoids the congestion seen in larger urban centers.

Home to California Polytechnic State University, the city also attracts students and younger residents. Housing costs remain above average due to strong demand, with median home prices around $1.1 million, according to Redfin.

Paso Robles

Paso Robles, located inland, offers a more rural atmosphere and is known for its wineries, agricultural roots, and open landscapes. Compared with Cambria and San Luis Obispo, home prices are generally more affordable, with median prices around $750,000, according to Redfin.

With a population of about 30,000, Paso Robles appeals to families and retirees seeking more space and a close-knit community atmosphere.

Ventura County

Thousand Oaks

Thousand Oaks ranked second overall, driven by its low crime rates and strong public schools. The city is characterized by suburban neighborhoods, parks, and open space, contributing to a family-oriented environment. High homeownership rates reflect long-term residential stability, though housing costs continue to impact affordability.

Ojai

Ojai ranked sixth, offering a smaller and more intimate setting. Located in a mountain valley, the city is known for its emphasis on wellness, the arts, and a walkable downtown. Home prices tend to be higher, reflecting both the scenic environment and the lifestyle associated with the area.

Beyond San Luis Obispo and Ventura counties, peaceful communities can be found throughout California. Coastal towns such as Carmel-by-the-Sea, Half Moon Bay, Bolinas, and Mendocino offer quieter seaside living made it to the Money Inc.’s list.

Wine country destinations including Sonoma, Healdsburg, Yountville, Calistoga, and St. Helena are known for their rural character, while mountain and foothill towns such as Nevada City, Grass Valley, Truckee, and Lake Arrowhead appeal to residents seeking space and access to nature.

Several Marin County communities, including Mill Valley, Larkspur, San Anselmo, Sausalito, Tiburon, and Los Altos Hills, also appeared on the list.
