Theft at Downtown Clothing Store
By an edhat reader
I heard on the scanner that a large group of kids went to a clothing store in the 600 block of State Street this afternoon and stole a lot of items.
This was before 5:00 p.m. and the store was the Volcom clothing store. Initial scanner traffic stated the alarm went off after a group of 10 or more went into the store, took items, and left from the back door.
It didn't sound like anyone has been caught yet.

Dec 07, 2021 01:34 PMThe number of Californians age 65 and older grew from 9% of the population in 1970 to 15% in 2018—and is projected to reach 21% by 2030. Birth rates have declined and are projected to decrease through 2030, meaning fewer younger workers to support the increasing number of public employee retirees. For example, there were two active members contributing into CalPERS per retiree in 2001; the ratio dropped to 1.3 in 2015. Fewer active members and longer-living retirees contribute to higher unfunded liabilities.

Dec 08, 2021 08:04 AMTrans, have not heard this is true for our public safety unions. Their unions are too strong to allow this.
If we can't find enough people to take the sworn positions, maybe we need to rethink the system. How many calls require an armed response? Could 1/2 the force be community service officers to take reports and respond to homeless issues? CSOs could be armed with pepper spray and tasers and call for armed response if things escalate.
Thinking creatively will get us out of this mess, Ollie.

Dec 07, 2021 03:22 PMThis kind of theft has been happening forever so one can’t really point fingers at the cause.

Dec 07, 2021 09:49 PMAbsolutely! Prioritizing the health of the community in the face of ignorant calls for business as usual was the right call.

Dec 08, 2021 09:10 AMIt is easy to point to the cause of shop-lifting: the shop lifters. Then move on to the failure to punish shop lifters. This is not hard. Downtown retail cannot withstand this current scourge of unaccountable shop-lifting. Nonsense to claim this is the way it has always been. Because at one time we did have a healthy downtown retail. Then vagrancy, gangs and thefts were given a free pass. And now we no longer have downtown retail - it was not just online shopping that caused this. Online shopping became attractive because of the degradation of downtown retail. Now this same theft is attacking online shopping with organized porch pirates taking their fair share of what you paid for and never received. Law and order, folks, It is the only way we can survive as communities. Set the standards for civic life and hold everyone to them.
