NEW WHITE-HANDED GIBBON ARRIVES – Welcome, Mel!
Mel, the male white-handed gibbon, arrived at the Santa Barbara Zoo late last week. Born on September 27, 2000, Mel comes to us from Gladys Porter Zoo in Texas.
Mel and other newcomer Chanee have been paired under the guidance of by the Species Survival Plan, a program designed to support the long-term survival of endangered species. Chanee, who joined us last month, has raised two daughters and has been an excellent mother. This will be Mel’s first opportunity to start a family!
While Mel completes his quarantine, Chanee may visit him behind the scenes. The pair will likely not be visible for a couple of weeks as they get to know each other, but both will soon explore Gibbon Island together.
We’re thrilled to welcome Mel to the Santa Barbara Zoo family! More updates will be shared as Mel and Chanee settle in. You can also support the gibbons—and all of the animals who call the Zoo home—by becoming a Foster Feeder. Gibbon Foster Feeders will be invited to a special event celebrating Mel and Chanee’s debut later this year.
