Santa Barbara has south facing beaches. The sun is supposed to rise in the east. The Pacific Ocean does not face east from California.
The above photo was the sunrise from SBCC on Sunday just before 7 am.
Why does the sunrise appear over the Pacific? Is it because sun is so low in sky near winter solstice? Is it an optical illusion or was I having some sort of acid flashback?

I enjoyed the picture and obvious play on words. We live in a beautiful place!
Maybe take a compass out and review that when you’re standing in that location. If you’re standing on the grass on SBCC looking straight out, you’re actually looking South-East. Look at Google maps lol.
i spend a lot of time in the exact spot you took this photo at. You’re looking southeast slightly.
not west at all.
Goleta and Knein have it right–it looks like that point is Mugu, and if you shoot past that you are looking at Malibu, which is a compass heading from Santa Barbara of about 115 degrees, or East-Southeast
This is hilarious.
Why is this even printed? 😂 nice photo though.
People are able to post to Edhat , asking questions, offering tips, etc. Not everything is “news”. There are probably a lot of people here who think if they’re looking at the ocean, they must be facing west.
whoosh
The poster obviously knows that the sun rises in the east, that in winter it shades toward the SE, but thought that looking at the Pacific Ocean in Santa Barbara and seeing the sun rise was such a strange anomaly that it would be fun to share. How weird to be West Coast, look at the Pacific in the morning and still see the sunrise?
No, that’s not it.
If you are still puzzled by the position of the sun at sunrise as viewed from SBCC, take a look at the linked article and check out the illustration of the path of the sun during winter and summer. Imagine you are looking directly south from SBCC.. the illustration matches the situation perfectly. https://seasonalknowledge.weebly.com/sun-and-the-seasons.html
